What's the most you've spent on a guitar?

I just got my custom commissioned guitar 3 weeks ago. By far the most expensive guitar I've ever bought. I don't regret it one bit. It turned out even better than I had hoped for. I think one factor that made it work was I really did my homework beforehand. I knew exactly what I was after before I ordered it.

I'm occasionally tempted to pay >$10,000 for a guitar. Likely never will actually do it though...

I never thought I'd go over $5k but I did just that with my Froggy Bottom H12 Deluxe purchase. I don't regret it. But then again, I also bought it used for well under the $10k it would cost me new so I have no regrets as I know I can sell it and recover my investment if I decide I want something different.

My only regrets ever were with custom ordered (by me) new guitars that didn't live up to my expectations. That said, I didn't lose a ton when I sold them as their base prices went way up. My current RainSong Nashville OM shorty is a one-of-a-kind custom that I bought new (but didn't order) and I'm loving that.

I doubt very much I would ever order a brand-new custom build over $5k unless of course I came into some stupid money, like a big lottery win.

Keep in mind that many of those (pick your figure) $5000 guitars are now selling for far more - meaning if I bought a $5000 instrument, say, 5 years ago, I might have to pay $8000 for it now. So my "limit" expands commensurate with inflation and a luthier's ability to command higher prices. One I bought for $6700 6 years ago would be $25000 now, to use an extreme example as an illustration.

During the time I was doing the most horse trading you could get a LOT of (used) guitar for 3500-4000. That was my "most ever" until I commissioned my Charis dread in 2016.

For me 2k.

I say if you have the cash flow and know what you’re buying you should have zero regrets. You can always resell as a wash, as profit or a minimal loss and consider it a rental fee.

To me it makes way more sense to have a guitar you can enjoy worth X then have that money sitting in an account.

But up to now, between $5,000 to $7,99.

$6-$8K range seems to be where many small shop makers are at for new retail prices these days on 18 & 28 style offerings. Collings Traditional series, Bourgeois, Santa Cruz, P. Thompson, Martin's Authentic line just to name a few. Go to 42-45 style or exotic woods and you are near $10K pretty quickly. Some of these new builds are incredible and in my opinion, worth the cost if they bring joy and fuel your musical passion. A family member bought and spends lots on a Harley - which I dig. But I want to play and be surrounded by lots of guitars and mandolins.

"High-end" means something a little different to each of us, because we're all in our own individual boats financially. I will say that I've never regretted a single purchase that I consider higher end... It's quite the opposite -- I wish I could have bought some of them sooner.

Ditto. $1200.00 was the most for a single instrument. $3200.00 for all current guitars. I don’t think I have the ability to appreciate anything above that either sonically or from a craftsmanship standpoint. I understand that there’s something about beautiful expensive guitars that some enjoy for sure. I have absolutely no problem dropping 18-20K on the latest high performance motorcycle ��

Blimey! Starting category as "under $5,000" for the most you have spent on a guitar? Try "under $500" and I could have a box to tick.

In the UK, I would say that the vast majority of acoustic guitar sales sit in the under £500 category (inc UK taxes). And pretty much all of the rest, excepting a small percentage, are in the £500-£1000 bracket. There's quite a mentality shift required to be moving into the over £1000 area.

Less than $5k. I don't think I'll ever spend $5k on a guitar but I won't say "never"... you never know. Perhaps a nice retirement gift when the time comes.
