Default Greven Vintage D28 / 1935 Brazilian and Adirondack

This guitar is complete so I did not post as a build thread. It's actually at the Handbuilt Musical Instrument gathering in Portland, OR today and tomorrow.

New to flatpicking, when I decided I should have at least one dreadnought, I contacted my friend, John Greven. I think this is going to be a very special guitar and will pick it up next month. In the meantime, it's at John's home and visitors get a chance to play it in a bit for me.

Interesting is that John has told me the Brazilian is circa 1935. Recovered from a ship wreck. The original log went down with a ship in 1937, and the salvaged log produced some 35 sets of wood of which John used to build this. My Greven 000 is a wonderful flatpicking guitar, and I can only imagine what this one will be like. The other guitar in the picture will be a 000, 'twin' with the same woods. Only the D is mine.

John is an incredible builder, and one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet.

Congrats!!!

A buddy of mine (the bass player in my band) bought the '35 D-28 Road Trip Guitar from John a couple years back. Adirondack over Brazilian... Amazing guitar!! I played that and its sister while they were at my house a few days. Fantastic work, tone and appearance!

You are in for a lifelong treat!

Default Updates when available

I will post some photos of the completed guitar soon. As some point in the future I'll update the thread with a soundclip. I'm pretty excited.

That looks and sounds to be quite the treat you have coming up. I can't wait to see/hear more about it.

Very cool AZSlacker! You will have a couple of fantastic Greven guitars!

I was at an AGF gathering about a year ago and played an Adi/BRW Greven D-28 style dreadnought and it was a great flat picking guitar. If you are into flat picking, you're going to be very happy with this new guitar!

Should be a great guitar. I'm bringing it to Puget Sound in July for camp. It should do well.

Maybe Photomat will be there with his Greven, also, and you can compare these two dreadnoughts. I think he goes to that same Bluegrass gathering. Maybe you two have already met.

AZ Slacker, you are one fortunate fellow to have two Greven guitars. I was fortunate to pick up a Brazilian - Lutz 000 last summer at Healdsburg and can attest to the fact that John builds fabulous guitars.

Yes he does. They are amazing, and congrats on yours. I've played John's 000 Brazilian/Lutz and it's one of a kind. Amazing sound. Bet yours is as well. Lucky us.

Congrats on the upcoming guitar. I am sure you will be thrilled!. Mine has become my go to guitar and I love it. I do live in the Seattle area and I also think there is one in the Portland area…so if you come a day or so early let me know.

I won't be at the Puget Sound workshops….but would surely be able to take some time to meet! You will be thrilled with the tone of this guitar. That wood and John's craftsmanship are top notch!

I wonder if that 000 is spoken for?

John is a national treasure and not only an incredible builder, a first rate human as well. Long life to John and to the legacy his babies will carry on. Beautiful build, but then every Greven I've seen or had the pleasure to own (including my Prairie State) has been amazing. Best of luck with your new guitar and many happy hours picking and playing!!!
