Talking strings and sound 812/814

the LGS has a consignment 1997 812ce, so i ran down there and played it for about 1/2 hour. it sounded ok, but pretty flat. they have new 814ces in stock in their new showroom which sound much bigger and brighter. especially the bass respnse. the young man at the consignment shop mentioned that the strings are just bronze phosphor on 812ce and that replacing them might make the guitar sound bigger and brighter.

i kind of doubt that, as the bass on the new 814ce just blows me away, but the price is significantly more, almost double.

so the question is? will changing the strings to more expensive ones like elixirs, give the consigned 812ce the same incredible bass response and full bodied sound as the new 814ce.

thanks for any comments
