How is the redesigned D-18 selling compared to the older version?
I have read so many rave reviews about the redesigned Martin D-18. I have one and like it. I'm curious how the redesign model is selling for Martin compared to the older design. Is the strategy of "upgrading" their standard models working for Martin (I know some don't feel the changes are an upgrade)? Does anybody know?

I think it's selling much better, although I personally prefer the straight braced version.

I think they are selling way more since the redesign. I like the sound of both versions but the looks on the new version are much nicer imho so I think that's a big selling point.

I'm sure there will be actual numbers down the road, the D-18 has historically been the stepchild of the D-28 (mahogany versus rosewood in general), despite being less expensive.
Straight braces will always have it's fans, and while the D-18 is stepping into Vintage territory in some ways (bracing) it's not in others (neck profile), and you still have GE's and Authentics to tempt Martinites. Personally I like the new D-18 changes, but no standards will ever sell as much as the entry level models, choices are good............

I would say it's been a very big success for Martin. Everyone seems to really like the redesign.

Try and find one at your local music store. They can't keep them on the shelves.

How is the redesigned D-18 selling compared to the older version?
Actually most stores don't carry them around the Raleigh, NC area. When I ask, the sales people have told me they don't sell many 18 models. That's what made me wonder how they are doing overall.

I've had some good guitar sales people but the one thing that the vast majority of them tend to suffer from is the "What I got is the best stuff - Syndrome". I tend to want to believe that isn't a dishonest intent but rather a desire to make a sale and if they don't' have it they can't sell it as easy.

Humm....we don't sell many D 18s. We don't stock them......
I have a pile o money in my pocket and want to buy a guitar today and play it all weekend. Guess I'll buy one I can play and take home. We don't sell many D 18s...... I don't understand how someone can call themselves a Martin dealer and not stock D 18s. I much prefer them over the D 28. |

I have always wanted a D18, to cherish, carry around, wear out the top, and pass it on to my kids. Never happened, I was crazy about the way they sounded. Fast forward 20 years, started playing more and I got a Taylor. The D18 sound was still nice to me but I was looking at the GE or the Vintage, then Martin answered my prayers and came out with the new D18 and WOW. I played about six before I found mine. It was perfect for me. For $1800 bucks out the door, I was sold. Get you one and you will see.

Rumor has it that the "new" D-18 is selling like hot cakes, and that the "old" D-18 was having a batting slump. I suppose if the D-28 was not selling well, that Martin would give it the same treatment and abandon the old model. I really don't understand why old D-18 sales would drop off, but folks would continue to buy the sister D-28. Martin makes so many models that it seems a shame that they would discontinue an old standby. But with any company, it comes down to profits. The new D-18 has some nice features, but I personally don't like the new neck profile, and I much prefer the sound of the straight-braced model. I've got two, and they are not for sale. I know that most people have embraced the changes and do not agree with me, but it surprises me that the "old girl" was put to rest with so little objection from the Martin community...

In the spirit of the OP I would love to hear some hard facts from actual vendors. Even though I concur with the sentiments expressed so far it 's all opinion and frankly good advertising.

Would a guitar center have the new D-18? Some people are really emphatic about them.
