Well, I'm from Alabama, and I like it. I think it's one of the most universally liked songs, no matter where you're from.

I played in a small band who deliberately wrote our own song called "Freebird." It began very close to the original and then morphed into something else. We ended with an extended jam that included the words "Freebird yeah" and some people enjoyed it, some hated it and many people left.

They might have left because I sometimes tuned by B string sharp just to make it tough on everyone.

If you're not having fun then why bother?

Playing live in the Jax/St. Augustine area most of my life I've heard this a lot...and my band played it a lot and we did a good job in covering it with justice since some of the surviving band members and associated southern rock bands like Molly Hatchet, .38 Special members did also frequented the clubs we played. I played their songs right in front of Artimus Pyle, Larry Junstrom, Danny Joe Brown and met Donnie Van Zant a few times and others. In fact my old bass player Barry Dunaway, replaced Larry in .38 Special this past year.

I still love the song and play my own acoustic rendition both on my YTC and in my live set; in fact I played it yesterday at my gig and coincidently my girlfriend took a pic during it:
Here's my home recording live on my Lowden: Freebird

It should be noted that I see calls for "Freebird" not as a request but a form of heckling, and I deal with it as such. Someone pointed out that this happens less than it once did and that is true. But that makes it no less annoying when it does.

I've done a mash-up of Stairway to Heaven, Smoke on the Water and Freebird. Acoustic solo, that usually quiets the requests call-outs!

I am still confused as to why anyone would want to listen to me. When i get a request i hope i can give them a little of what they want.

Here is a story a buddy passed on to me just today... happened about 34 years ago in Eugen Oregon at an Elvin Bishop show... I've edited it a bit for language and clarity for a wider audience

During the show, there was a great big logger guy sitting right at the front.Tough looking but happy, having a great time. Kept yelling out requests to Elvin. About 2/3 thru the show he yelled one out right when the band was kicking off the next tune (and Elvin was grabbing a beer out of the tub). Elvin waved the band to a halt, looked at the guy, and said "MotherTrucker, I got a mother, a wife, and twelve girlfriends tellling me what to do. I don't need you telling me what to play". The big guy was devastated, just shrunk down. I felt so bad for him, I think he was a crushed sensitive giant. (Must say though, great line by Elvin, no?) I was thinking, real a-hole moment, EBishop). But then I noticed that during the next few songs, Elvin was leaning down, talking and smiling with the guy, salving his feelings. I really think that EB, full of Bud, hadn't realized how badly the guy would be hurt. The Big Cat left the show happy.

I just laugh, tell them I don't know it, and say, "How about this one instead?" Then we just play the next song in our set list. Never had a problem from that yet.

Well, since we play pretty much nothing but Irish/Celtic, any time someone from the audience yells out "Freebird", it's always been a joke, so our standard response is to ignore it or just have some fun with whoever said it. Never had a problem. Funny, but on the rare occasion someone does yell "Freebird", the rest of the audience usually yells back, "Ugh" or "No Way!" ...and that's the end of that.

I don't actually gig, but whenever someone yells Freebird at me, I just yell it straight back at 'em. You should see the looks on their faces!
