I have a great version of Monte Montgomery doing a version of Stairway to Freebird. Two birds with one stone.

So I'm not exactly the most mature, and I tend to find an opportunity to scream Freebird jokingly at every show I go to. I try to do it so it's clear I'm joking and people get a laugh. I also have a variety of taste in music, so I've got all sorts of reactions. A few examples:

1) Andy McKee - laughed hysterically and said he'd never heard that one at one of his shows, but that'd it'd be great to put something together so he can whip it put if it ever happens again.

2) The Used - Got the middle finger and a chuckle from the lead singer.

3) Needtobreathe - I saw them inadvertently as an opening act. Had never heard of them, but I think I've heard they're pretty big now. Anyway, they were totally playing up their southern roots, so obviously I had to scream Freebird. The singer got so mad that he stopped everything, called me put, and lectured me about us all being adults.

Default So, What Do You Do When Someone Yells "Freebird?"

1] Tell them we've got it penciled in to close the fourth set - if they're still in the house at 4AM they've got a deal...
2] Induce hum/feedback/snap-crackle-pop in the sound system and pretend I didn't hear him/her...
3] Induce gastric noises (very effective over the sound system) and pretend I didn't hear him/her...
4] Tell them we don't know it but we'd be pleased to do the rare 14-minute version of "Afternoon Delight" instead, right after our Partridge Family tribute...

Play it.

Musicians are about three rungs lower than prostitutes...and I am proud to count myself among you. We are just entertainers and liquer salesmen.

If you can get out of it and not turn the crowd against you have at it.

I went to see a Blackmore's Night concert a few years back, when they played at Chicago's House of Blues. For those that might not know, it's Ritchie Blackmore's current band. I was surprised to hear more people yelling for "Freebird" than "Smoke On The Water".

Could sing this for 17 minutes after the request is made, too:

In-A-Gadda-Da-Freebird, baby. Don't you know that I love you?
In-A-Gadda-Da-Freebird, baby. Don't you know that I'll always be true.

Once upon a time, my friend Jeff and I had a great version of Freebird. At the jam at the end we would change one chord and go into the jam at the end of Star Ship Trooper, by Yes. Always went over well.

Most musicians here in Bama can't stand 'Sweet Home Alabama' either.
