Has to be close to mahogany in terms of density, stiffness to weight ratio etc, and I be therefore sounds like mahogany. IMO it's irrelevant what it's actually made of as long as you like the sound. Lots of old Gibson enthusiasts found that out the hard way by realizing their old SJ or AJ models were wild EIR and not BRZ.

Does it matter? No. Am I curious? Yes.

Jim, your pics and comments have given me the most insight. I'm well aware of different woods bearing the generic name of mahogany, so that's why I was interested to hear what others thought.

I did email the luthier to inquire about specs. There are two identifying numbers on the label and neck block, so I'll update this thread if I get a definitive response.

Cool Which species of wood is this?

It's MAHOGANY without any doubt. It appears that a light colored filler was used to fill the pores of the wood, instead of the traditional dark filler. Unstained, this causes the wood to appear lighter, or natural. I have a cedar/rosewood guitar where this was done, and it looks much lighter than the rosewood color we have all come to love. I also have a few Sitka/mahogany guitars with a dark filler was applied, then stained, and it matches the rosewood color of many of my other guitars.

Hey ozrufus,

I can’t add to the discussion about wood type, but I can talk about Thanh guitars… as I also have a Thanh guitar which I bought in Saigon back in September 2012. Mine is a handmade, all solid, small body guitar, which they said is a cedar top over koa back and sides… and it is an excellent instrument, plays well, has beautiful tone and it gets played every day.

I paid $140 and $20 for a case.

If you log into the AGF member galleries… you can see it here…

Looks like African Mahogany(Khaya) to me but I don't do well at "Name the wood contests",so don't place any bets.

Hi Kip,

After you click the link and get the "don't have permission" thing, go to the top right hand corner of that page and login using your AGF name and password... then go back to the thread and click again... voilà, lo, there it is, ta-da, presto, behold, etc.
