dead note problem
Every note on my instrument sparkles like a diamond save one:G on fret#3,
.0125 E string. Could recently changed fret have caused the problem? If so what went wrong? |

Likely... have the fret checked.
Have you changed the string ? |

Try searching the forum here and the build section for "wolf note", "wolf tone" or "dead note" there is plenty of reading on it James.

This could be your answer, every guitar has it somewhere to some extent.

I was thinking wolf..but more common on violas and cellos.
Usually caused by a slight difference with another string or the natural tone of the body of the instrument. I would check the fret and change the string. How is the open g on string #3? How is the G on string 6 third fret ? It is not paranoia when the wolf's saliva is dripping down your neck. http://www.acousticguitarforum.com/f...d.php?t=288565 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wolf_tone http://www.classicalguitardelcamp.co...p?f=43&t=13814 Last edited by bohemian; 09-28-2014 at 08:03 PM. |

yes Bohemian, the G string is slightly out of phase, I'm going to read up on wolf notes
the low E has sharping that I must be careful of, possibly due to neck bow |

thank you all
Thanks, I'm going with the unseated fret theory- the fret wire used does not protrude as far into the slot as the originals, this condition is near the edge of the fretboard, and the sparkle is heard if I bear down with all my might.
Thanks for your time- it's my cost for living in Paradise- if we want the right stuff we buy it ourselves! |

James,
Just curious, what 'instrument' are you referring to....brand, model, etc? The reason I ask is you said the low E plays sharp (I'm guessing when fretted), so wondering if it has a compensated saddle. Could also be an issue with the nut slot or just in need of a good setup. Regarding the dead note, was it okay prior to replacing the fret? Why was just the one fret replaced? Did you replace it yourself? From your description, it sounds like a fret seating issue and needs to be redone with the same type of fret that matches the slot width...and done professionally to make sure the frets are level. DC
