Naphtha for fretboard?
So, I've been a firm believer in Gorgomyte for cleaning the fretboard of my Taylor 410 when I change strings. Problem is I've recently moved to another state and can no longer find it locally.
At a paint supply store today I saw a relatively inexpensive canister of naptha. Would that work to clean the fretboard on my 410? Sorry for the naive question, but I guess I'm a little leery of taking lighter fluid to my guitar. |

Naptha is the "universal" cleaning fluid. It works great on guitars. I would always oil my fingerboard after using naptha to clean as is very drying.

I am very leery of putting anything on my fretboard. When I change strings I rub it down lightly with very fine steel wool. The oil from your fingers is all that is needed for the fretboard.

Dr.Ducks is the best thing I have used. SCGC and other custom shops use it as well. Great stuff!

As hydrocarbons are extracted from crude oil, naptha is between gasoline and kerosene. I would not use it on my fretboard, it might have a drying effect. However it is a very good solvent.

Naphtha is fine for cleaning your fingerboard and will remove all oils and built up dirt, but it will have a drying effect so the board will need to be conditioned or oiled after it is cleaned using it. It is harmless to any finish and is easily cleaned up after use as a cleaning solvent.
Dr. Duck's Ax Wax is a good follow up to a cleaning with naphtha and the fingerboard conditioner available from Stewart McDonald Guitar Shop Supply is a good choice as well. It is essential and important to oil your fingerboard after cleaning it in any case. The oils from your fingers are not enough to condition it sufficiently. Regards, Kevin Gallagher |

i thought oiling was only meant to be done once a year?
or is this the issue only with naphtha?
