New - that's right NEW - and great acoust0-centric bands - heard of 'em?
All,
I'm looking at many of the cover tunes played by most of you and artists mentioned as "must have" acoustic albums, etc... and notice a lot of stuff I love, but it's mostly older music. I just want to see how many of you are aware that there is a very strong group of newer bands that are acoustic instrument driven. These are great bands with AMAZING songs. Do some youtube searches on the bands I list below. As an acoustic guitar player and fan, I think it's refreshing that these bands are finding success. List (with a great song example): Iron & Wine - Naked as we came Bon Iver - Skinny Love Fleet Foxes - Tiger Mountain Peasant Song The Shins - New Slang (yeah not so new, but great) Great Lake Swimmers - Your Rocky Spine Neutral Milk Hotel - In the Aeroplane Over the Sea First Aid Kit - You're not coming home tonight Blitzen Trapper - Black River Killer Ray Lamontagne - All the Wild Horses Anyway, I can go on and on, but I don't remember a time in my life with this many current, excellent acoustic driven acts. THERE IS HOPE FOR MODERN MUSIC!!!!!!

yep, heard of them but a few are not exactly "new."
For instance, Bon Iver has been touring for at least 2 years (and played his last show before going on hiatus this fall) and Iron and Wine has been around a while. But I do agree that new music is moving in a more acoustic/folk direction and that parallels the emergence of a great underground movement in fingerstyle that is gradually gaining a noticeable following. Another good addition to your list would be City and Colour which is the brainchild of Dallas Green , of the Canadian post-punk outfit, Alexisonfire. His sideproject sounds nothing like his main band but shows a great side of his songwriting that doesn't get to be showcased often in Alexisonfire. He currently has 2 full length albums, a few LPs and will be touring again this coming Spring. Go see him. |

Maybe I should have worded the post differently. By "new" I didn't mean unknown, but relatively new - last 5 years or so.
I just think it's good that there's great acoustic music out there doing well.
