I'm hearing/seeing the same thing. In listening to his spoken voice, to my ear there's an unpleasant room reverb/frequency presence. I'm not surprised that a guitar recorded in the same environment isn't particularly pleasing. I applaud H.B.G. going for a sound as natural/unprocessed as possible, but it's doesn't seem to be the best room/setup in which to gauge tone.

Another consideration (mentioned by a poster very early in this thread) is the player's touch.
In another thread, you stressed the concept of developing smooth changes between chords which translates into a more listenable performance. Since that seems to be a focus for you and possibly not to the same extent for every other player, the guitar you hear somebody else play will likely sound different in your hands. So, that translates to get the guitar you think intrigues you, play it for a while and return it if it doesn't sound as you had hoped. Tony

As has no doubt been mentioned when you hear the guy talking in the first vid. It is immediately apparent the the room has a tremendous amount reflection going on which means significant comb filtering which can and will not only take the life of some of the sound BUT can also have excessive build up in certain frequencies depending on the specific dimensions and where the mic is placed relative to those dimensions specific to that build up or comb filtering etc. etc. etc. not to mention it is a mono recording so it will lack sound field width. All in all a great example for two things ----the value of room treatment AND the fact you never really know what happing with a YouTube video for comparing sound so proceed with extreme caution...

It's not only the room, which is very lively in some frequencies, but the player. One plays with fingers and the other uses a pick of unknown thickness and material. Beyond that, he often seems to be picking quite close to the bridge.

I do believe this thread has been raised from the dead and that the OP, Barry, has long since made his choice.
So did I, as a matter of fact. ETA: Whoops! See post above!

The OP was from 2018, so my guess is the poster has probably made his decesion by now. That being said, the 1st video is using a mic I don't recognize, and it looks to be a cheap one. (you can hear the voice mic cut out just before he starts playing, so my guess is that is all you are hearing) The second video is using Neumann KM184's and a Royer R2121 ribbon mic going into LaChappel or UA Audio preamps. That's a BIG difference right there. From a recording standpoint, it's pro's vs amateur hour.

HaHa, I didn't notice it was '18 thread, I was the second 2022 responder. Thanks for pointing that out Barry. Still a good reminder re assessing online audio.
