The man was certainly a character. I found his personality just insufferable (like a fusion of Johnny Rotten and Courtney Love), but despite his abrasiveness, artists seemed to have thought highly enough of his work, and work he did and on some iconic albums. And Big Black’s pretty great.

"Albini was critical of the music industry, arguing that it exploited and stylistically homogenized artists. As a part of his opposition he refused to take royalties from artists he worked with, arguing that it was unethical."

Wow. That's from wikipedia, but it's true he is (was) okay by me.

He could be a jerk, but an ethical jerk. And sometimes what comes across as "jerk" could alternatively be called "strict adherence to one's principles." Without question, his bands like Big Black, and all the music he engineered, had a big influence on me.

Our Son and his Friends are involved a little at Electrical Audio. I sure hope the studio can keep going. I have been enjoying the YouTube channel. I have watched several episodes and will be sad as I get the other episodes watched.

He'd have been a legend if just for the drum sound on "Surfer Rosa."

That ^ wasn’t even true when he said it. It’s certainly not true now.
He was talented for sure, but he was also an ***. It’s true that he only worked for a flat fee and no points on his recordings - very generous - but after the record was done, he’d frequently heap insults on the bands who’d just paid him. Not cool at all.

"A patchwork pinch loaf from a band who at their top dollar best are blandly entertaining college rock. Their willingness to be "guided" by their manager, their record company and their producers is unparalleled. Never have I seen four cows more anxious to be led around by their nose rings."

That's what he said about Surfer Rosa by The Pixies. Surfer Rosa which he produced. Sure, he kept working with Kim Deal, and sure he apologized for it, but that's not the only time he's publicly insulted someone like that. I don't understand how people were able to trust people like that. Yes, not cool at all.
