The reasons for the reaction, or at least its amplitude, are fairly obvious. Don't recall anyone getting too tweaked about Kid Rock going country, and he's got about 1/1000th the talent.

What country I do like isn't in the big pop style, so I'm not all that interested in it, but I'm hardly a huge country fan, so not sure my opinion matters much. That said, it seems to have more going for it thematically than most country/pop. There are some layers there.

She can do whatever she wants. It's a free country...right?

It's a very slippery slope when one starts questioning the "street cred" of a performer who performs a certain genre of music. I say forget the bona fides and let the music speak for itself...

US made "genres" are largely Marketing terms.

The term "country" came from the early mobile recording machines that could be installed in the back of a Packard Estate car.
It was called "country" as opposed to music recoded in city based studios.

They recorded any type of music by any sort of people regardless of ethnicity.

Is bluegrass a form of country music or a form of Poaceae?

Springsteen sings working man songs and he readily admits to not having worked a day in his life.

I don't think "Country" is Country.

Most of what passes for country these days doesn't appeal to me much, and isn't "country" in the way I think of it. I'll say the same, I guess, about Beyonce's album (I overheard some of it when my wife put it on to check it out).

Most of the criticism I've seen is just from loudmouths and keyboard warriors, not actual musicians. I feel like anyone who considers themselves a musician should be happy for anyone to dip their toe in any genre without all the judgement.

Actively dislike that guy rather than just not caring. But I thought he was always country-oid, from the get-go? Anyway he also doesn't get 1/1000th of the publicity. Fortunately.

It's the "Beyonce does country music!?!?! OMG OMG OMG!!!!" stuff that some people find annoying. I think it's a free enough country that people are allowed to express that.

Kid Rock started in Hip-Hop/Rap, then turned to country/country-rock.

Of course they're allowed.

Seemed to me Kid Rock was rap for a long time before he started doing more country-influenced stuff.

Vaguely remembered him being considered a semi big deal for being a country/rap fusion sort of thing. Yee-haw redneck hiphop persona.

Note to self, never originate or participate in any discussion of Kid Rock ever again.

As Ray Charles said, “theres good music, and everything else”.

I agree, and further labelling is a waste of ink or bandwidth.

Why not? She is very talented. She can sing whatever she wants to.
