When the converted/perverted dreadnought was introduced in 1934 (IIRC) it inherited the "OM" title for a while until Martin realised tat a flat top could not effectively play rhythm in swing bands.

At some point they re-introduced the "000" but as a rhythm style 14 fret and with a shorter (24.9" scale). I have no idea of the logic of this.
I'll add to the confusion. I had two of the dovetail neck 000-16s, one a 1990 and the other a cutaway ca 1992. One had a satin finish and the other a polished finish, oval sound hole, and 22 frets

Both had 25.4" scales.

These ceased to be produced in 1994 I believe. The 16s became 24.9" scale with a "simple" dovetail neck joint.

Not only is it confusing, but it's also kind of frustrating. I mean, I would like to have a simple unadorned Martin 18 style guitar with a sitka top and mahogany with a 1 3/4 nut and a 2 1/4 or 2 5/16 string spacing, preferably a 00 short scale.

But this is nowhere to be found in Martin's catalog.
The closest there is is the Ceo-7, but it's a Martin looking like a Gibson but sounding like a Martin with a so so sunburst...

Thus, the reason for looking elsewhere, but there ain't much alternatives unless you go for a boutique $$$ brand.

I mean, if I go 000, the only option is the new 1937 000-18 and it's 9k CAD 😳

Kharma: Isn’t this what you describe? (00-18, 1.75”, 24.9”.) Sweetwater has five.

One could make the same comment about all of the reimagined guitars in the Standard Series. While Martin widened the nuts from 1-11/16” to 1-3/4” to make them more like pre-1939 guitars, the string spacing was not widened out to pre-1939 spacing. Even many of the Authentics are slightly narrower (my D-18A 1937 has 2-1/4” string spacing and not 2-5/16” like the original, although frankly I prefer 2-1/4” spacing anyway). The reality is, the market for narrower string spacing is much greater than for wider string spacing.

Well yes, but with one notably big exception : the 00-18 standard has 2 5/32 string spacing... I want either 2 1/4 or 2 5/16

The weird thing is that they make their extra expensive custom ones with 2 1/4... If they feel narrower is prefered by most, wouldn't it make more sense to make their expensive models that way too to sale more of them? Or rather is it to make them more desirable because they have this rare lusted for feature?

I mean they could at least make their 00's standard in 2 1/4 since they're marketed for fingerstyle or at least make a 0012-18 standard that would be the only one with 2 1/4.

Oh well... I know I will end up spending that money at some point!
