Smile The term "Axe"

Why do some posters refer to their acoustic guitars as "axes." I thought the term applied to electric guitars.

An axe is a tool as is a musical instrument. I've heard all kinds of instruments referred to as an axe, especially horns.

An axe is a tool to use to display your chops!

"Axe" does in fact mean an electric guitar.

Acoustic guitars are "boxes" ...

Apparently it's a slang term for a bowling ball as well. Who knew?

Jazz players have called their instrument an "axe" since before jazz came on the scene. (Except drummers, who play the "skins"). It's the tool with which they get their work done. It's applied to guitars, fiddles, basses, horns ... whatever. No, it does not refer only to electric guitars. And no, there is no "proper" usage. When a sax player refers to his axe, we know what he means.

I always heard the term axe comes from "cutting sessions" --jazz jams where players would competitively try and "cut each other down."

Ever since I first started playing music in the 1970's, I've occasionally heard other musicians referring to their own and other people's instruments as "axes." It's never been especially common to hear this, not by any means, but it's not so rare as to be unheard of, either. This is in reference to acoustic instruments (not just guitars but banjos, mandolins, etc.) as well as electrics.

Once and awhile someone will say that, that's all. I see far more usage of the term here on these online guitar forums than I ever have heard in person.

Just like woodshedding means to practice/play.

I know a guy who named his guitar "Excalibur". When first got it he showed it off to me and some friends and said, "Check out my new axe!" I always thought that was ironic.

Exactlty.

Let's use it in context:

"See that cat? Yeah, same axe as Charlie...He's been strutting in here every night like we owe him something. But Bird's playin' tonight man. This cat's gonna get cut...he's gonna be running back to the shed, I guarantee!"
