Default Immediate Shipping Advice Needed!

My first bout of GAS was a bad one - 3 in one week - with two set to ship ground from California to Massachusetts this week. Should I be concerned in light of the "Polar Vortex" winter storm being hyped on the news?

The first (Martin 00-21 Kingston Trio) shipped today from Elderly and due to arrive Monday. I'm not worried about that one. The second (Martin 000 Jimmy Buffett Pollywog billed as "original condition" and looking like it) is set to ship tomorrow from San Francisco with an ETA of next Thursday (seller says it's well packed with bubble wrap inside case, foam peanuts outside of case and heavy duty box). The third (a 1973 D-28 12-string) was through a UMGF forum member and he's willing to hold or ship based on the forecast.

I'm REALLY hoping to post NGD pics without new crazing!! Any advice?

Default shippin

just make sure you don't open the box for a good 6 hours (if not longer)
let it warm up gradually while boxed
I have had a few get shipped over the years in really cold weather. I waited overnight a few times to be sure before I opened the box
never had a issue

Agreed. It's not like the guitar will be sitting in a blazing hot truck all day. Cold will only damage the guitar if it's exposed too quickly to a warm environment without acclimating first.

No problems shipping/receiving during cold months. Do a search on winter or cold weather shipping and you'll find dozens of threads answering the minutia of cold weather receiving.

You might want to consider buying one more guitar this week (there is still time!) in case one of the first three arrived damaged. That way you could return the damaged one and still have three new guitars!

Thanks Bob, Toby and Steve. It's going to be a bit like Christmas Eve waiting to open up those packages until they acclimate! But I feel much better about the impending mass arrival!! I will post NGD pics as they come in.

Lol! I made the mistake of joining a friend as "moral support" for a free group lesson at Guitar Center last night and before the class got started instructor said "If you need a guitar you can grab anyone that you'd like." So I confirmed "Anyone? From either room?" and that is how I spent my first class as a "teaching assistant" demonstrating C and G chords on a $7K custom D-45!! The price tag sure helped my resistance!!

Everyone is spot-on so far. Just let them acclimate overnight before unpacking, and they'll be fine.

I've had many guitars shipped during cold weather. When I receive a guitar, I always let it sit for 8 to 12 hours. Then I prop the lid open a few inches and let it sit for another hour or so. This is probably overkill, but to me it's "better safe than sorry". I've never had any problems due to cold weather shipping.

What everyone else said don't open the box till it adjusts to in home temp and don't try to hurry it along by placing it by a heater. I had my D28 shippied from Arizona to 70 miles south of Buffalo in the mountains on the PA border in the middle of winter. It sat for almost 2 days. After 16 hours I cut the box top open. 12 hours later took it out of the box. About 20 hours later opened the case. It's tough to wait maybe I waited to long but the D28 was perfect.
