I have spent about $9,000 on my current guitars. In '02, I sold my '58 Strat (bought in '76 for $500) for a healthy sum and as a result, all my guitars still haven't cost as much as what I earned from the sale of that Strat.

I've got three guitars. A Yamaha that was purchased new and two Martins that were both purchased used.

Actually, I figure my total investment would fall into the "negative dollars invested" category since all three of these guitars were paid for with money I made by buying and selling other guitars, fiddles and mandolins.

I don't think my wife looks at it that way, but, in reality, that's the way it is.

Rich, if you go over a $50k valuation you are in a killer guitar tax bracket. Send me one of your Martin OM/OOO guitars and you will then be able to pay a much lower rate guitar tax. Trust me on this one.....

If you're willing to play along and see what we come up with, I'll start it off:

My total value of what I invested in the guitars I currently own is $2736.00.

Anyone willing to see what kind of total amount we come to?

I'd be willing to keep a tally.

(If you can put the amount in red it will be easier to keep track.)

I will update total after every 10 posts!

Cool thread but there is no way you will get an accurate count because guys with large collections who could account for 90% of the total are not likely to post the number.

Guitars including electrics, a resonator and a Banjitar,$15,350 rounded off. That's over 15 years of buying so that's not a bad per year average.

Including the one I have on order, everything guitarwise under my roof is about $4000. Start adding in other instruments, and that could quickly double.

+1, rule of thumb, the top 10% own 90% of the value.

My Wife may see this sooooooo. I will not grab the ears of a sleeping dog today. Let's just say I have 20 guitars and most of them she bought for me.

So to guestimate an accurate total, we should total all of our responses and let that represent 10%. Wow.
