Thumbs up Iris Dement

Hey folks, I just thought I'd share a wonderful experience we had when we saw Iris Dement in concert at the Carpenter Center in Long Beach.
It's only the second time I've seen her in concert, but it will not be the last.
Over the course of one week, she performed in San Diego, Santa Monica and Long Beach. We saw her on the last night of her short California trip, and let me tell you, I was and still am mesmerized by her presence, her voice and her personality. (Although presence and personality are pretty close neighbors). She was so real and natural, you know, like someone who was born to bare her soul. After the concert, we were able to thank her and hang with her and some of her family, (Not Greg Brown however)... and she was gracious and sweet, not having one ounce of ego or pretentiousness what so ever. What a warm and genuine person with such a songwriting gift and a voice to go with it. I was a little surprised that she wore no makeup or jewelry, except for her wedding ring. Nothing for "show" or flash. I LOVE that in her. So, if you EVER get the opportunity to see and meet her, you'll fall in love with her also. What a true gift for us, to know someone such as Iris, and be so lucky to be able and enjoy her God given talent, and also finding out that she is very warm, authentic, and friendly, even to those she's just met. Too bad for us she lives in Ohio, and we're in California..we'd see her perform anywhere, anytime! If you're not familiar with her, check out her U-TUBE videos, especially "Let the mystery Be" and anything with John Prine, who turns 63 today. Happy Birthday John! Anyway, gotta go, Keep it in tune! 1 folksinger

Anyone not familiar with Iris Dement should definitely check her out. I've got just about all her CD's. The song You've Done Nothing Wrong (from the album My Life) is one of the most heartbreaking songs I know. What a lovely performer and writer she is.

I will say that some people find her voice a bit too much. It is a very plaintive and emotional soprano, sort of the female vocalist equivalent of Del McCoury. For my part, it's a gorgeous voice.

from The Way I Should

Quote:
October's leaves were dancing 'round
like angels dressed in robes of Red and Gold
but November's come and gone now
and they're lying in the gutter out along the road
They're gonna make their way out to the ditch or someday to the sea,
they'll get to where they're going without the help of you or me
and if each life is just a grain of sand
I'm telling you man, this grain of sand is mine
I just love the "grain of sand" line...

She is really something.
For me, it started with hearing "Our Town" on the last 'Northern Exposure.'
I tear up just remembering that song...

And isn't that what music is for?

Default Iris Dement

Check out the vedio on YouTube with Iris Dement and John Prine ( In Spite of our self)
You will really get a chuckle out of that one. Love them both.

She's lovely. The first album is still my favorite, I prefer the stripped bare sound to the more Nashville sound of her later records. Seen her live a couple times too.

The alternative doesn't bear thinking about

I first heard her on BBC Radio - Mike Harding. The track was 'Let the Mystery Be' - and is still my favourite.

She seems to be a particularly 'honest' songwriter and performer - and I like her guitar

What kind of guitar does she play, is it some kind of Gibson maybe?

Had the pleasure of seeing Iris and John Prine at a small venue in Eureka Springs, AR a few years ago. She is all you said and they are a great match.

I love her gutsiness and her song writing - there are a number of her songs that cut right to the bone, so much so that I'd be nervous to perform them out (think Wasteland of the Free)... but her voice is a bit too idiosyncratic for me (hows that for a comment?).

So I only have one of her CD's and probably wouldn't go see her perform... but by am I glad she is out there.

FWIW, I love the youtube clips from the transatlantic sessions with her, Joan Osbourne, Jerry Douglass & a bunch of Celts.

I first saw her on the Transatlantic Sessions, on YouTube. She is with Emmylou, Phil Cunningham, and a lot of others.

Some years back, when Steve Earle and Del were on the Mountain tour, they did a show in Olathe, Kansas. Iris (who lives in KC) came up on the stage to sing "I'm Still in Love With You" and it was magical. I love her voice and her style - she's a gem.

Ditto here. I recall being moved by that song, in that context -- and the song continues to haunt me. Incredible songwriter.
