She was free to dislike your music. She was rude to be so vocal about it. Implications for you - none.

I get a real kick from people's different opinions of music. I find it fascinating. It appears their opinions are drawn from their own tastes.

It has long been said that the blues make you feel good. I read about a scientific study that corraborated that, and not only for blues.

Folks cry during sad songs at funerals. It's a release.

Anyone who insults a musician at an opem mic should be kicked out.

Audience member: when are you going to play happy songs?

Townes Van Zandt: man, those WERE the happy songs!

Haha, this rings true, there’s much more miserable stuff I could have dug out!

If Bright as the Morning Star is an example of your music, I would offer that you are really good and most people would appreciate your performance. I certainly do. No matter what her reason, the audience member in your story was just plain rude.

It is one of mine, and I did in fact play that last night. Thanks for the compliment!

I think you just gotta be tough when you do open mic, especially in a bar. It can be a tough crowd. I consider it training in playing for a tough crowd. I just think of the Blues Brothers up there on stage with the audience booing and throwing beer bottles, and I think, "I've finally made the big time."

You might consider working up a version off "Yummmy Yummy Yummy I Got Love In My Tummy" for the next obnoxious listener that thinks you should play a "happy" song...as for me....sing me a sad song...

The first one didn’t go so well. An old lady demanded after a few of my songs that I play something happy. I tried, but I don’t have a lot of happy songs. Someone drummed along to it on the table so I’d assumed that I’d made up for the sadness, but the old lady went on to exclaim loudly to several people that my music “made me want to cut my throat and thank God it’s over”.

This made me feel quite indignant and I decided to play exactly the same set at the next pub as an experiment. Thankfully, it went down a lot better. There were lots of whoops and cheers after all of my songs. Several people came up and congratulated me, shook my hand, asked where they could find more of my music. A much more pleasant experience and my ego feels less bruised!

Not really got any questions, just thought I’d share my experience tonight.
Try some Woody Guthrie on the old lady.

This makes me think of a song version I'd like to work up... "You Are My Sunshine". Everyone thinks of it as a happy song... but the 2nd and 3rd verses that you never hear get progressively darker. Start it upbeat and peppy, then as it spirals downward switch to a minor key as it gets more and more sinister...

I would likely have said, "Please ma'am, don't let me stop you", just because that is sort of the loving kind of guy I am.
