Default What Shubb Capo for 1 7/8th nut Martin?

I'm looking for a suggestions on what Shubb Capo would work best on a friends 60's Martin 00-21 NY. It has a wide fingerboard and a thick 12 fret neck.

We're considering the classical which is wider than the standard Shubb, but that one is for a flat fingerboard.

we'd appreciate input from someone with experience. Thanks!

Hi, I have a local luthier made 0028 12 fret with a 1 & 7/8" nut width, to 2 & 3/8" saddle string spacing over a Martin style 24.9" scale. It has a modified V style neck profile.

I only use Shubb C1, or C1b basic original capos (the ones with the screw and little delrin cap, and, all are fine.

I've just rechecked with a standard C1b and it fits my guitar up to and including the 5th fret.

I'd counsel against the classical cao as it won't have any camber and so will most likely buzz in the middle strings.

You could get a 12 string capo, but honesty I don't think it would be necessary.

Hope that helps.

I agree with Andy, I have several guitars with 1 7/8 nut widths, two of them are Martins, and the standard Shubb works fine on all of them.

Thank you both! I did try my standard Shubb and it works but was right on the edge. Wondering if their was something more forgiving, the 12 string Shubb is a good suggestion.

I've just tried my G7th Newport capo, and maybe its a little wider, but the standard Shubb seems to work fine up to the 6th fret on a guitar with 2 3/8 saddle spacing.

My Shubb capos are all of the 12-string variety.

Andy,
I believe it would buzz on the outside strings because it would grab the inner strings first, their being at the apex of a curved fingerboard, right?

I'd get a Shubb for a 12 string guitar.

Thanks everyone for your help! We’re going with the 12 string.

Since I'm extremely picky I used a 12 string capo and cut the end a bit shorter.
You can then trim the rubber sleeve to be the same length.

One of my playing partners uses the standard Shubb but uses the longer 12 string pad on it, cut a bit shorter. The bar was long enough, but the slightly longer pad made it so the strings didn't pop out.

The ideal Shubb top bar length varies dependent on how high you capo. I sometimes capo as high as the 9th fret so the longer models work well for me.
