Any difference in tone and playability would be for you to judge ultimately. I have a 314ce which just seems to be opening up now. It has a bright tone with the sapele, nice for some songs. If I had a do over I would stick with real mahogany. I have considered moving up but looking at other options out there.

I can afford an 814CE but am wondering how comfortable I'll be on stage with it, where it's so expensive. My 314CE is precious and it still looks like one of Keith Richards' Tele's I've just beaten the heck out of it.
414CE-R. But even with the 314CE playing it through the ES2 pick-up you might not notice enough difference in sound on stage to make it worth the price difference.

I’ll take a somewhat contrarian view…I’ve owned many nice Taylors over the years, and have gone back to the 314ce as my favorite. But I favor mahogany and sapele over RW. I have not owned an 814, but played quite a few; they are beautiful but for me personally I prefer the 314. But if it is an 814 you want, then life is short and you should be happy!

Find a used 814ce in good shape. You can occasionally find one for around $2000-2500 usd.

Mine has an older ES1 and I love it.

I had a 314 for about 15 years, it was a nice guitar.

I have an 814 now, for me, no comparison

My Taylor all-hog 524 would disagree, but I really like having both an 814 and 524....
