I swore by Fender Mediums in dark brown tortoise for decades. Loved them, wore one out every gig or two, tossed them and bought more in packs of 10-12. But like so many reliable quality products that I once loved (Levis, Hanes and Trix) they got changed, probably to cut mass-production costs.
Mrs. Tinnitus and I were still dating in 2006 or so when she thoughtfully gave me a package of 100 Fender Mediums. They had the right logo brand (sort of), but they were a lighter shade of tortoise and felt a tiny bit thinner, kinda flimsy. Appreciative of the gift, I tried hard to adjust to them. But we all have our preferences (imagine that - a stubborn guitarist) and I didn't like the feel/sound. Actually tore several of them in short order practicing and gigging with my rock band. Now and then, when I go digging through my parts bins or now-idle gigging suitcase, I'll stumble over a nice old-school Fender Medium. In A/B comparisons, they play like my new go-to pick, the Yellow Dunlop Tortex .73mm. I'd stick with the Fenders and buy more if I could, but only the old dark ones. tortoise for no sane reason. I should switch to ANY other color that's easier to find when dropped on stage

Since you asked - I dislike and avoid celluloid.
Why ? I know the history - D'andrea first used it as an alternative to "tortoise" shell - which was good at least for the turtles, but it wears and has a tendency to break. There are far better composites available now.
