Default Respect is Key

The way that I interpeted the post was; that he was appreciating beauty in a woman and a guitar and commenting on the similarities in the shape of a woman's body and a guitar. The human body has been appreciated in art for hundreds of years and doing so doesnt necessarily imply that one is "ogleing".

Very true, Pat.

As I pointed out in the original post, a thread like this will inevitably stray a bit from the intended path and become simply too sexist for our community. We're a respectful lot, us AGFers!

(if you want to see what an unmoderated, disrespectful community looks like, simply pull up virtually any popular Youtube post and read the trailing comments ...profanity is just the beginning. It's awful.)

Back on point, the human form has been used in art as long as there has been art. In contemporary times, feminist writers like Steinem and Russell have suggested that we must make a distinction between unacceptable and acceptable use of the female form in particular. Paraphrasing from my college days' memory, the thinking goes something like 'it is natural and positive to find the human form beautiful and arousing. The key is avoid creating material that is degrading to the participants and in the end is respectful of all human beings participating or observing.'

For me, the key is respect. Great artists, and I'd include our great luthiers here, have obviously drawn inspiration from nature, and from woman, to create their art.

We should celebrate both. Respectfully.

This thread is okay as long as we are celebrating the beauty of women and guitars without letting it become too sexual in nature. I agree that many women and guitars are indeed gorgeous and am not offended by the comparison nor mention as long as it is in good taste.

That is very refreshing to hear in this day and age of everyone being offended by everything.

I think my husband was first on line to make that comparison

Thank you. I've never been terribly sensitive to stuff like that.

As long as we stay away from exact preference of ratio of lower bouts to waist width I think we're OK...

That isn't Watts. Her photo was under this one but I guess it was a little racy.

(Sorry rejoice)

I have a T-Shirt from the 2003 Healdsburg Guitar Festival that melds the guitar shape with the back of a woman. Their logo that year was called "Beauty & Tone". Pretty inventive.
