Default Songs in Open C

Just curious if anyone has any song recommendations for Open C. I love playing the two Elliott Smith songs that use it, but I'm trying to justify keeping a guitar tuned in it (I only have two six strings at the moment).

David Wilcox does a number of songs in open C (CGCGCE). "Eye of the Hurricane," "Rusty Old American Dream," and "Show the Way" come immediately to mind, but I'm sure there are others.

If you're into fingerstyle guitar, a number of artists use open C or variations. "Ripples" from my Solo Guitar CD is in open C, and I do a lot of songs in Csus2 (CGCGCD), which along with DADGAD is one of my "standard" tunings. Al Petteway and Mike Golay also use open C and Csus2 frequently for fingerstyle guitar. There are plenty of others, too.

Default Cgcgcd

If you're happy with this tuning, loads of Martin Simpson's stuff, but once you've got into the swing, moving between tunings is easy - from Martin Simpson in this tuning you get:

One More Day
Boots of Spanish Leather
Icarus
Air to Maurice Og
and many more

and then a tweak to CGCDCD (just one string) gives you loads more as does tuning down to CGCFCD.

I don't now play any pieces in standard tuning.

Good luck

Adam

Here's a fun read about John Fahey and Open-C.

http://www.johnfahey.com/CTuning.htm

To make a list of songs that I play in Open-C, I'd have to list almost every song I play. I do everything in CGCGCE, though I sometimes horse around in Open-G. I only tune to Standard for houseguests that want to play.

I play 50% of the time in CGDGAD, 49% in DADF#AD and just returned to playing in Standard tuning. I love the deep thrum of CGDGAD on my Thompson T1.

I think Led Zeppelin's "Friends" is in Open C, if memory serves.

Thanks for all of the suggestions, a lot of them were just what I was looking for. I've just been experimenting over the last 6 months or so in alternate tunings with a lot of Nick Drake stuff, which turned me onto open tunings. I love them, I guess I just need to add a couple more guitars to the collection so I don't have to stress out my equipment too much

John Fahey used it for some of his darkest songs, as well as some of his prettiest ones such as Sunflower River Blues. I also play Leo's Tennessee Toad and Busted Bicycle in open C on both 6 and 12 strings.

Hello,
I think this will pass muster with your request:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=53PZkJsZ2t0

C-G-C-G-C-E from low to high.

I wrote this one a few years back and it's on my second CD, 'A Tale to Tell'.

Hope you enjoy it!

This to Howard: Your performances are superb! What tuning do you use for your version of Mystery Train? I like the fact that you use Robbie Robertson's 'bridge' section!

BTW, Bruce Cockburn's lovely tune Foxglove is in open C...

Hi Paul,
Glad you're enjoying my stuff!

You're about the second person who noticed that I got my basic arrangement layout from Moondog Matinee by The Band!

Paul Asbell was the first to notice it when I had him sit in with me at a house concert I did.

I use open G on Mystery Train, but I'm playing it 'cross-tuned', meaning that I'm not in the key of the tuning. The song is in the key of F#, which is the v7chord of B.....(open G capoed 4th fret is B).

My friend, John Monteleone, used to play Foxglove when I first met up with him back in the early 70's!

Regards,
Howard
