Default Changing String Gauge

Should I be concerned changing the overall string gauge on my 12-string? I am going from 12-52 to 13-56. I keep reading that making such an adjustment messes with the current setup. Is this a significant change?

Thanks for the advice in advance.

I'd normally be super hesitant putting those on a guitar but I recently received a string recommendation for .013 Newtone Heritage Low Tension 12-strings.

Available in .010/.043 and .011/.047 and .012/.051 and .013/.055.

I think the .012 and .013 sets are only available through the UK factory.https://www.newtonestrings.com/shop/...tic-12-string/

Haven't tried them myself - ordered a .013 6-string set to try first - they were delivered yesterday.

I would hesitate adding heavier strings to a 12 string. You may be adding too much tension to the neck and bridge. My Taylor 414ce has the same tonewoods as my 454ce they’re basically the same guitar. The 6 string uses medium gauge and the 12 uses light gauge. There must be a reason for the difference in the strings factory gauge specs.

The guitar in question is the Taylor Leo Kottke signature model. It is designed for this gauge (13-56). I'm just hesitant because for 15 years I've put 12-52 on it.

Totally different story - you should have mentioned that in the beginning.

That guitar should handle them fine - as you say yourself, it's built for it.

So, why are you making this change?
It’s not that huge of a change with a six-string.
But with a 12...that’s a lot of strings.

As a LKSM, being designed for the heavier strings, I’d still exercise caution.
But, likely a slight truss rod adjustment will be all that is needed.

I would think that it would be fine.... as long as the nut slots are cut to handle them ( quite a difference between 52 vs 56 ).... and we can assume that you are tuning to C#... or something close to that. I love a deep throaty sounding 12 string. It sounds like fun to me!
