Default Fingertip Callous Problem - A little different

I need to play several series of fast grace notes, each involving plucks, hammer-ons, and pull-offs; they're pretty quick and need to be light, almost brushes. The problem is my callouses…they're so smooth and shiny that, when pulling off, my tips just slide off the strings without making much if any sound. I can dig in but then the grace notes are too heavy. I've tried filing the callouses with mixed results at best. Besides the obvious (more practice), does anyone have any suggestions? Maybe a cream or something…

Thanks!

That's a technique issue you just need to work on, not a callus issue.

Default Calluses

+1 on the technique.

I file my calluses smooth, when I don't is when I run into problems catching and hanging up when doing slides or hammers.

Do them slowly at first, once you have e technique down you can gradually speed them up.

Sam here, I file my calluses down smooth, in fact it is almost a daily occurrence, otherwise when pulling, hammering and bending or just plain picking the callus gets caught up in the strings.

I took some lessons, and one of the first exercises I started was legato technique, which is the use of slurs (non articulated notes... hammer, pull, slide, bend). I still do legato exercises every single day (no more than 15 minutes), though they have evolved greatly over time. Here are a couple of decent videos on different aspects of technique with exercises. Really pay attention to technique, start slowly, and use a metronome to get your timing down as you slowly increase speed... hope these help:
