Default Taylor 214ce vs 214ce DLX Comparison

Hi,

I've just watched Tony Policastro's review of the Taylor 214ce vs 214ce DLX. I must say I did notice a tiny difference between the two, the standard model seeming a bit louder and clearer to me than the de luxe model.

However, I fail to see how the differences between the two models can explain it. Apart from the pickup system (which is not used in the recording), the only difference between the two models is that the de luxe model has gloss back and sides, while the standard version has a satin finish. Well, I could conceive that a different finish on the top could have a small influence, but on the back and sides?

Would the differences in this particular comparison be related more to the fact that no two guitars sound the same than to the fact they are different models?

I was a bit surprised at the video. I've heard conflicting information about the DLX using a different type of laminate, but Tony didn't mention anything about that.... The DLX sounded closer to what I would expect from a rosewood b/s guitar.

I have a 210e dlx. Differences over a 210e that seem to improve the sound acoustically are forward shifted bracing and the relief rout inside the top. For plugged in playing you get ES2. The combination is quite good. I have had two 110s pass through my hands and tried numerous other 100 and 200 series. They always seemed sterile to me. Not so the dlx which is here for the long term. I was very surprised.

I dont recall the laminate being described as any different. The back and sides are gloss but thats cosmetic.

Ah, that would explain a lot the differences. I wasn't aware of them, particularly because Tony said both of them have forward shifted X bracing and didn't mention the relieve rout.

Although Tony's guitar "demonstrations" are well respected, he does sometimes get the specs wrong. He also keeps referring to the Taylor X14 series as small bodied guitars when they are the same size as a dreadnaught, just with a narrow waist.
