One of the top songwriters? Absolutely.
As a performer, Id put him somewhere in the middle. But as mentioned already...it isnt a contest

Oh, come on folks! If you are talking about pure pop artists then it has to be the second biggest selling band of all times behind the Beatles. Well, it is Eurovision night (I'm not watching, no really I'm not....I've got my eyes closed!) PS. My money is on Lithuania. Mmmm.....Perhaps Iceland was better. Blimey the French entry was very.........French!

No doubt the Beatles were an amazing combination of talented individuals that came together at the right time. To credit one of them with all or the majority of the song writing is unfair to the others. At least John and then George, in that order.
As a musician I find Sir Paul just, meh. The guy is crazy rich though. No denying that. |

Elvis is the King of Rock & Roll. Even that fat old drug addicted E didn't have anything to do with Pop!

Your opinion is that Paul McCartney never did amount to much without the rest of the band?

Not a contest, but no. And I like the Sir Paul.
I might go for best pop bass player. He played some brilliant bass lines to unforgettable songs. Many of which he wrote, so there's that too. But the crown is taken, isn't Michael Jackson the King of Pop? Then there's Prince. Last edited by stephenT; 05-22-2021 at 03:43 PM. |

You can't discuss greatest pop artists and leave Madonna out.

Why is it so necessary for some to claim that somebody is the greatest pop artist, guitar player, or whatever?
There are too many factors that involve individual taste as well as too many who did great work to establish one as being clearly greater than the rest of the crowd. Tony |

The only person I'd put in the same league as the Beatles is Bob Dylan. Totally different musical styles, but their legacies will be felt through the ages.

Not even close. Stellar early career, but after going solo succeeded only in trashing his own reputation. Deserves huge respect for his work during the Beatles years though.

There are list makers and there are non list makers. There are virtues in both approaches. History is the world court of judgement as a philosopher once said.
And history keeps changing thereby changing its judgements. At this point in history it is safe to say that Paul is right up there in any list of people who've made an enormous and enduring contribution to music and culture in general. And perhaps he's not just on the Mt Rushmore of pop music (and excellent earlier analogy in this thread) but maybe/maybe (together with Dylan and few others including Lennon) he's going to carve himself into the general Mt Rushmore of humanity in general: a rather crowded Mountain top to be sure, one that surpasses Parnassus to include not just artists of all types from Homer and earlier, but all true giants of our species. |
