Default #1 in a series of guitar related ethical dilemmas...

a train is running out of control, down its track. directly ahead in its path are 5 valuable guitars, some custom made, others are pre-war martins, all with really cool tonewoods, and stable, repaired cracks. they have been put there by a mad scientist/forum member, in complete disregard for their beauty and playability. suddenly, you notice a swich that you can pull which will divert the train down a second track. unfortunately, there is a single, equally valuable guitar on that track which will be destroyed. it appears to be made from sinker wood and old growth rosewood, with nicely crowned evo frets.

should you pull the switch or do nothing?

nothing; and/or pull out your camera

I think either switching choice at the last minute would result in a train wreck that smashes all the guitars.

Except of course if these imaginary instruments are far far in the distance, then probably calling 911 is a good idea for any humans with guitars on the train itself.

good to have this to think about before it happens; I can prepare.

yours in tune!

Well there's pre war martins on the track with four guitars, so I'm saving those. If it was 4 custom luthier instruments vs one pre war martin. I'm saving the martin. Those are the most significant guitars ever made and we can't make any more, unlike the high end luthier builds.

"Mad scientist/forum member" ha! I laughed out loud at that one!

Do any of these guitars have cutaways? Save the one(s) that do not have cutaways.

Seriously though, I don't get why the choice to save four over one wouldn't be obvious. What am I missing?

I'm guessing that it's impossible to jump off the train, run ahead of it, and flick the switch before the train reaches that point. So, pull the brake and hope for the best.

Rush down the track where the multiple nice guitars are, play as many as you can, and then jump off the track just as the train reaches you. I've done this dozens of times. Trust me. It's the way to go.

i think the ethical dilemma is that the single guitar is as innocent as any of the others. by becoming actively involved, and pulling the switch, you become responsible for its destruction.

Save the newest, the others are old and worn out.
