Default #$@&% Harmonics!

I need some advice!
I've recently been working on "Little Martha" on my new Larrivee OM and I have to say it's beginning to take shape (Nothing like Duane, but then...who is?). My difficulty is the harmonics. Not on the 12th fret but on the 5th and
7th.
I've watched several YOU Tube versions and all seem to have no difficulty making the harmonics ring on the 5th and 7th.
What am I doing wrong?? Any tips would be much appreciated.

Best,

David

Touch lightly, release quickly and experiment with the point on the string at which you pluck it

I think it also depends on the guitar. Some guitars have harmonics that will ring out with the lightest touch, while others hardly ring at all and die quickly.

How old are your strings? Fresh ones might make a difference. Nice tune to work on, "Little Martha". Good luck.

Hi David...
When you attempt playing them by themselves (not within a song) can you make them sound?

The point you touch is the fret wire directly over the top of the fret wire (toward the sound hole) and not within the fret itself. It is a very precise spot.

It is easy once you find the exact point to find it ''again''. As some mentioned fresh strings make it easier to initiate them. there is no room for error on the 5th and 7th frets...even moreso precision is required for the harmonics at the 9th fret and just above the 3rd fret wire.

Hope this helps...

Also, 5th fret harmonics ring out more the closer you hit them with your plucking hand to the bridge.

+1 on new strings!

Good luck!

Dan

Thanks all. I knew I could count on this forum!
Yes the string are new (2 weeks) but I will be changing as I broke a string last night.
I'll try the touch closer to the fret and moving my picking hand back toward the bridge.
Thanks again for the advice.

Best,

David
