Default Different strings... different guitar?

I haven't played EJ17s for a few years after playing them exclusively for 20 years. I felt like my Martin was getting a bit muddy (probably humidity) recently, so I gave them a go. Very nice change. Might not be a permanent switch, but it's nice to have choices.

Choices are indeed good. It's also good to be reminded that what sounded best to a player years ago when a guitar was new, may not necessarily be what sounds best years later - either on that instrument but also to the player who's taste has changed.

Good to know an old friend won't let you down.... Are you using the EJ17's on the Taylor's also?

I have a quick question that was hoping you might answer for me. I am looking to try a Taylor 518 out, for a guitar that has tremendous power and still have good definition while finger picking. Your 818 and 816 (in your signature).. are where I would like to know the differences. I have a GS7 (716) and was hoping that the 518 would have a marked difference from it. I have no way to play the 518 without ordering it first.
Is there a big difference between your 16 and 18 Taylors? How would you describe it? (Not wanting to hijack your thread?)

Thanks

Hi. Yes there is a big difference! I owned the 856 and switched to the 858 and the depth is night and day. For a $3,000 guitar I always recommend playing it first. But I think you can be sure that it will have a bigger and deeper tone than the 716. I used EJ17S on the Taylor briefly. It's a bit too bright with those.

Thanks much! I assumed that there would be a big difference.

Yes... the GS series are made for medium gauge strings. I have put lights on it, and it sounds much better with mediums. It has the cedar/rosewood combo and just sounds great with any medium set I use.
