I don't have any guitar lust or hero worship going on, so it would be this one from the guitars I already own

Ahhh. Good one. I’d add whatever Nick Drake was playing on pink Moon.

There are lots of musicians I admire for their playing and their songwriting, but that alone doesn’t make me want to play their guitars. But I do like a great player getting a sublime tone from a particular instrument and the “one” I’d like to check out is the Ryan guitar Pierre Bensusan played on the Altiplanos album. It’s like a sunbeam coming through the clouds.

I actually already did this, as far as instruments associated with famous players: Circa 2001, I played Wes Montgomery’s L-5 CES, the single pickup version with the heart inlay on the top. Mandolin Brothers had it, and Stan was gracious enough to let me play it. Somewhere I have a photo of the encounter.

It was this one:

FYI, I think that’s Rick Laird (later famous in the original Mahavishnu Orchestra) on bass.

It would be this 1941 Martin D-45 I'm playing at Gryphon Stringed Instruments a couple years ago.

Amazingly, this guitar was in a USN ship locker in Pearl Harbor when the attack occurred. Both the guitar and its owner survived the attack.

As I recall, this one sold in a day at over $200K.

Best sounding acoustic I've ever played, but WAY out of my price range.

I’ve heard various descriptions after people like Critter and Billy Strings have played the Martin. Both say notes sound different but can’t explain why. As for Docs I heard Billy playing it and the tone sounds really good.

Those are my 2.
For me it would be a WWII Gibson J-45, a “Kalamazoo Girls” axe.

My brother has an old J-45; he thinks it's great.

I've played it when it was a lot younger (1969), but it did not impress me, maybe because he & I had tried some Martin Dreads at a music store the same day. He bought the Gibson because it was what he could afford at the time; he really wanted a D-28, but it was almost twice the price.

Also, I'm not a Dread fan, mainly because I'm looking for better tone, not more noise.

Besides, he's just a Bass player; hehe

I wouldn't mind playing a Languedoc. It doesn't have to be one of Trey's, though plugging in to his rig would be something else.

My oh-so-tastefully modded '76 Guild D-35.

Either that or Jerry Garcia's Alligator.
