Default Mark Knopfler appreciation

Ok first I have to admit that I am late to this party. Bear with me as I try to explain. I play mostly gospel & bluegrass, but I have been a Dire Straits fan since seeing them on MTV. But I didn't know about Mark Knopfler specifically.
Truthfully, I don't pay much attention to stars and their lives. They are often, well, I don't know, I am just not interested. I just like the music.
But when you all put up the threads about his guitar auction you got my attention. I have combed the internet for everything on this nice man's work. Wow talk about talent and wonderful songwriting. And his voice, all humming away then the punching riffs, so familiar they are like a satisfying comfort food from my youth.
I am so grateful to see that much talent is in someone who is also humble, funny, kind and generous. So thanks Mark, and thanks AGF!

He is amazing. I adore the score he did for Princess Bride... it's said that Rob Reiner was a fan and reached out to Mark hoping he would agree to do the score for the movie. Allegedly, Mark agreed as long as Ron found a way to include a specific baseball cap somewhere in the film... the cap that Rob wore while directing This Is Spinal Tap!

Here is a link to the music Mark wrote... I think it was absolutely perfect for the film. And I mean perfect.

There are 12 pieces in the score...

I have been a huge fan of MK for decades, but... he sure has been regurgitating the same stuff over and over again for the last few albums. Similar to the way Van Morrison has been in a rut for the past 20+ years.

When I first heard Dire Straits as a high school kid I was blown away. They sounded so different from the classic rock, hair metal and punk/new wave that was being played at the time.

I've been a Mark Knopfler fan ever since. His many film scores (Local Hero is my favorite), albums with Chet Atkins, Emmylou Harris and others show the breadth and depth of his musical genius.

Masterpiece....

That album and Roxy Music's Avalon came out around the same time - and for a few months not much else was played in my car.

Whenever I hear "Sultans of Swing" it brings back memories of my first job at a shoe store. It was played on the radio constantly at the time, and I never got tired of hearing it.

Count me among the thankful that MK chose a career in music.

Default Mark Knopfler appreciation

Brothers in Arms is one of the best albums ever. A huge hit (Money for Nothing) to make it sell, and a whole side of serious songs with a serious message. And of course great guitar playing.
I was in a band for many years and in it I played Sultans of Swing. So many times someone would tell me after that they really appreciated hearing it, and what a great song it is. The guitar parts in it, especially the solos, are among the best things I ever learned on guitar.

Mark's one of the greatest guitarists and composers in my lifetime. His life and music are Elegant and Understated. What a brilliant discography, and amazing film soundtracks.

Yes, I agree with your comment about Brothers in Arms. I never tire of those songs.

He and David Gilmour - the two most lyrical guitar players I've ever heard.

The full album One Deep River releases today. Three of the songs were released earlier this year.

I have a friend who worked in the college radio station. He called me one day and said get up here immediately, you have to hear this record that just came in. It was the first DS album. I think he played S of S about 10 times in a row, it was a low power station so you could get away with that kind of thing
