Default Instrumental of "silent night"?

Can anyone recommend a relatively easy instrumental version for guitar of Silent Night? Thanks, Reggie

John Fahey has a rather astounding rendition.

It's "ease" is debatable...but definitely something that can be learnt.

Love Martin Tallstrom's version:

I believe he offers the tab as a free download on his website.

Thanks, I am mostly a strummer, so need simple and this seems like a great one to start with. I need to learn something in 2 weeks!

Sure thing. Nick has an easy version and a slightly less easy version, so look at both. Good luck!

Easiest version I know is to start on A. From there your only other chords are either E or D. All of the melody notes can easly be sounded out right under the chords.

(A) Silent Night, Holy Night (E) All is calm, (A) all is bright.

(D) Round yon virgin (A) mother and child.

(D) Holy infant so (A)tender and mild.

(E) Sleep in heavenly (A)peace (A)Sleep in (E)heavenly (A)peace

Check Bob Evans version. Not exactly easy but it is my favorite version to play.

Default Silent Night (fingerstyle)

First time posting anything on the AGF, so I hope this shows up well. I know you said you're mostly a strummer, but you (or others) might like this almost simple fingerstyle version.

Thanks, I'll give this one a go! I think I can decipher the melody by ear, and that key seems to be a better one than D

Here's a head start. On your first A chord, the melody starts on the high E string. E>open, E>2nd fret, E>open, B>2nd fret. Now go forth and prosper!

Thanks for sharing that! Very, very pretty, and a perfect example of how nuance, timing, and touch can take a simple arrangement and make it interesting and beautiful. Although truly amazing players, IMO, sometimes the need to fill every space (e.g. Bensusan & Emmanuel), not only dramatically complicates the arrangement, but takes away from the essence of a piece and makes it distracting. This is Silent Night, and I think Martin captured it wonderfully!

Hi Sir Reggie of the golf...

Here's a video of a really simple version I helped a student learn a while back to play at church. It can be flat pick/strummed, or finger picked with relative ease.

Silent Night - CliCk

It centers around the 2 finger G fingering (3m0033) where I mute the 5th string with the pad of the ring finger, but you could use a more conventional (320033) if you like. I do it for the sake of easy fingerings.

No exotic chords.

The barred chords up the neck are Am7, and D7, and Em and on the part where the lyric would be "Sleep in Heavenly Peace" (word Heavenly) it's the D7th barred at the 5th fret, using the pinky to play the high note on the 8th fret of the 1st string and the pinky follows the note down to it's normal position for the last syllable.

So Hea-is pinky 1st string 8th, -ven- 5th fret (barred) open, -ly is 2nd string 7th fret.

My student used this to help her rough out her own arrangement which she played with a flutist and she said it went very well.

Hope this helps...

I second the sentiments of DRplayer, more notes = less music.
