What is the closest you can get to a Martin 000-18 for under $1000?
New or used. Living off a retirement income. Would take me at least a year and half to save for a used 000-18, let alone new. Nothing to really sell at the moment. Same short scale, size, wood. Call this an exploratory question.

You could take a look at either Blueridge or Eastman. Not sure on the Blueridge models (I think there were a few for sale in the Classified for less than $500), but look at the Eastman E6OM. Great guitar for the money.

You may be able to find a copy of the Martin 000-18 in the Blueridge range of acoustic guitars. Their all solid wood models, are very well done, sound great and usually cost not more than $1000.

A used Larrivee OM-03 or OM-02 would be my pick. I think the tone would certainly rival a Martin 000-18. Those Larrivees would be in satin finish and not gloss like a Martin -18 series. For gloss you'd have to go up to a Larrivee OM-05 w/a nice abalone rosette. It might not be impossible to find a decent used one for about $800 at this time. It's such a buyer's market in terms of used guitars — I have been very tempted lately to purchase!

See my signature.
It has often been said that a Harmony is a "poor mans Martin", but I prefer to say that a Martin is a rich mans Harmony...

You might want to look at a used 000-17SM. I think they are a wonderful guitar, worth looking into. Sounds and looks great too may I add.

The suggested Larrivees are not short scale.
The mentioned Eastman E6OM has a 25" scale, so just a bit longer than the Martin. I had one and it sounded terrific, although the string spacing is a bit tight for me at the saddle. If that's no problem for you, I think it's a great choice. I have a Pono c-20dc that is similar as far as woods, scale and size. If you can find one used it would be under $1K. Although sound-wise it's not very Martin-eque. Not as dry; more bell-like in its tone. Recording King has 000's with similar specs to a 000-18. I don't feel these measure up to the Eastman or Pono, but they're bargain priced and if you get one with no problems they're pretty good. |

Blueridge
The BR-143 is solid spruce over solid hog. But it has a 25.5 inch scale. I went down that rabbit hole for about 6 months (looking for a 000-18 copy). The Sigma already suggested is as close as you are likely to get. As you can see by my signature, I gave up the quest when I found the BR-163 which is Rosewood back and sides. It isn't a 000-18 but lordy does it sound good!
The Simon and Patrick Woodland Pro Folk would be close. It is spruce over hog and only 25 inch scale. It has a slotted headstock. The Seagull SWS Concert Hall is also close.
