Chris Stapleton on SNL last Saturday
Hello, when I saw Chris Stapleton superbe performance on SNL I recognized him playing the first time with a newer LG2. It looks to me like a 50’s reissue.
I really found it sounded amazing and very acoustic plugged in. My guess is that either he used the original LR baggs through an “IR preamp” or that he changed the pickup. What would be your guess? https://youtu.be/UgjlLHQ0Azg?si=FoNjKuaIi_2P8lmW

I don't hear anything to suggest that he replaced the stock pickup.

Every time I see him play he always has a good sound. He should probably do this song as a duet with his wife. They sound really good together.

After all that, and some inevitable signal degradation, do you really think anyone can tell the brand of pickup he was using? . |

My guess is that what we were hearing was prerecorded.

Sounds like factory pickup to me.

Including the string squeaks and the minor flub at the end?
This is about as clear an example of a live performance of a "guy with a guitar" as you're likely to see. I don't think CS is ever gonna be caught in an Ashlee Simpson moment.

It doesn't matter & no way to guess. As stated, his pickup is one of the smallest contributors to what anyone is hearing on their tv - and everyone is listening (millions of people) through completely different equipment/tv/speakers. It's been run through his gear, then into the NBC boards and tweaked along the way to sound good on tv. He did sound great but Chris can make a cigar-box guitar sound great.

You'd do well not to try to overanalyze the technical and just enjoy the show. A funny SNL story, when Neil Young lived in NorCal, his crew would hang out at a local bar. His sound guy told me when Neil played SNL, he would bribe the union sound mixer with a premium bottle of single malt. He still could not touch the console, but the guy would do what he said.

Be assured I’m not over analyzing this performance at all. I’m a big fan of Chris Stapleton and enjoy his performances all the time.
I just figured out I posted in the wrong forum should have been in the amplification section because I hear members complaining about the quirky sound of the lrbaggs especially there all the time. I find his guitar sound very good and acousticly correct. Cool that the « purists » showed up and telling me not to bother about the sound haha

Obviously I can't speak to which L.R. Baggs pickups are used on tv and recording, but I would guess that somewhere approaching a quarter (or more) of what you hear on stage or record come through Baggs pickups including, of course, James Taylor.
