For Ibanez (Hoshino) that era ended with a slap in the face by Norlin, and that's when they took the residuals of the Tama guitar facility and built the first Artwoods. The original catalogs of the day talk about originality, craftsmanship, small numbers, and wood, wood, wood.

Anyway, I hope my post wasn't offensive; I really am impressed by the quality of these guitars, believe me.
peak years for exports you`ve seen perhaps, I don`t know...but they made a lot of high end stuff here that wasn`t for export. The site I took these links from has the Japanese catalogs too but I`ll post links to the English catalogs since I assume you got them outside Japan...but the Japanese had been building solid wood guitars for a long time before these...Yamaha had the solid wood Dynamics they were shipping overseas well before. Maybe people overseas were not prepared to pay the prices Japanese people were paying for the best MIJs of the day, even now some folks believe the Japanese only build cheap, low quality stuff, and frankly I wish more people held that opinion `cause it`s getting harder finding the great deals I was getting just a few years ago...theres been an awakening abroad.
Maybe other members here would be interested in reading the catalogs from the late `70s...print them out and keep em in case you come across these in used gear shops...perhaps staff selling them will think they have just cheap MIJs, and that happens to me in Japan sometimes...most local shops are staffed by kids who don`t have a clue about MIJs made before the `90s.

I used to have one, my very first guitar - a mid '70s Takamine D-28 copy, back when they even copied Martin's headstock logo style. It was a spectacular sounding and playing guitar, despite being all-laminate. Wish I hadn't sold it. I only have a couple of bad slides I took of it. Probably not worth posting.

Here`s my two, my lovely 1980 Daion/Yamaki "The 78 Heritage" (pickguard is not original), and my simply wonderful 1999 Yamaha LS500.

Daion.

Yamaha LS500.

I am really enjoying seeing some of these wonderful guitars, the people are showing.

My old friend, and go to guitar when the muse hits, is a 1982 Ibanez V-210. Solid mahogany with sunburst spruce top, it has a great sound, plays great and the best part...I bought it from a pawn shop 25 years ago for $60.00.

Plain old FG-150J from the 70s. Now it's been 'adjusted', I love it.
