Default NGD: Collings CJ

I received this 1997 Collings Rosewood CJ after completing a trade from a dealer in Garland Texas. I was told that the CJ was initially purchased by a collector and recently acquired by a Dallas dealer.
It was advertised to be in mint condition and it pretty much is. The CJ must not have been played much, if at all. The only concern I had prior to the trade was the 1 11/16" nut width, as I prefer a 1 3/4" but that has proven not to be an issue. I am supremely impressed with the playability and tone of this guitar.
Happy dance

That's a beauty and looks to be in fantastic condition! Can you describe the tone compared to other guitars? Congrats!

Thanks Matt, I'm not very good at describing tone, but the CJ seem piano like and "sparkles with tons of sustain. It may be my imagination, but when played finger style, the CJ is louder than my D1.

Collings, and the CJs in particular, are very loud. My CJ35 is louder than my D18 and my SCGC dread, which is an extremely loud dread. Piano is good description, and I imagine the Rosewood is even more piano like than the mahogany.

Congrats on the big score!

Very nice! That is a beautiful CJ that looks to be in amazing condition given the age.

Wow what a time capsule! Needs plenty of playing to make up for lost time...
I have a '93 D3 and I think the Collings from the 90's are great.

Congrats on the big score!
Any idea structurally what gives the CJ its volume?
Thanks

Hard to see detail but it's a fine looking guitar that sure looks shiny and fresh for a 1997 model.

Enjoy.

Congrats on the CJ!! I have to say the 1 11/16 nut width on a Collings feels a lot wider than other makers 1 11/16.

Nice one--I really like the bound neck and headstock, which I don't think they do much any more on the CJs. Really want one of those--or a C-10.
