Is West Virginia the one North of the real Virginia or is it the opposite way around?

Its orientation to "North" is why it exists.

West Virginia was created out of counties of Virginia who sought to align with the Union during the Civil War. The statehood was pretty ad hoc and I've always been surprised it was not challenged. It always struck me that its creation actually supported secession rather than countered it.

Default Bump WV

I think it was a "city of refuge" for guys that fought for the "other side" and couldn't go back home after the civil war.
