Question Hatred for Gold Tuners? Why?

Somebody earlier today posted about a "growing hatred for gold tuners." Does anybody else feel that way? Is it just the gold itself (i.e., would prefer ebony), or is it the Grover brand?

Hatred is such a strong word.

Personally, I like them.

I understand. I was referring to the color gold, not the metal.

I have several guitars that have gold hardware but I do not really care one way or other . I have had the gold rub off and when that happens you got an ugly guitar so the nickel ages better I think . Academic for me as I am so fickle I have few guitars that are not relatively "young" less than ten years old in other words . If I had a choice I would not order a guitar with gold hardware just in case I keep it a very long time and at my age that ain't likely that is it will probably out live me LOL

Now that I read my post I wonder what made me think I could add anything constructive to this thread . duh? LOL

Later

I have Chrome, Gold, Plastic and Ebony tuner buttons on various guitars (plastic on the Gibsons). I like the gold just fine.

Hey they can always be swapped out if you don't like em. And then you can sell em on eBay for a mint!

The grover "gold" tuners are actually very good tuners, functionally that is. Cosmetically, on the other hand, they're a nightmare to keep clean - especially if one sweats a lot or if one's sweat is particularly acidic. Because they're shiny they show the fingerprints like a thorn in the flesh of your beautiful guitar. Often I've seen lovely pictures of Taylors... and then real ugly fatty fingerprints on the tuners... I suppose that's why people don't like them. Personally I like them also, I will get some wooden buttons for them at some stage though (probably for Christmas from my wife at some stage - instead of a tie or something really useless)

I don't have anything with gold tuners, so I don't have anything constructive to add either!

I've asked this before to apparently stunned silence, but does anyone know of tuners made of solid brass? I really like the patina on my Shubbs capo and think that same look would go great on an all-mahogany guitar. Maybe they'd be too heavy, though...

Oh - and as to gold or not , it makes no difference to me.

I'm in the process of completely converting a PRS from gold to nickel. Technically a dowgrade but to me, it will make it a keeper for good. I just can't stand gold hardware on my guitars.

Mike let me know how much the downgrade changeover ends up costing you as I have a Custom 24 PRS in Natural ten top with gold that I would like to convert back to nickel as well and while I am at it I would like to covert the tuners to the McCarty tuners instead of the slipomatics that came with it even though they haven't actually started slipping yet. My natural just would look better I think without the gold all over it but there are a lot of pieces to it so It might be quite expensive temolo and all that sort of thing would have to be changed as well. Also are you going to use all PRS parts or go aftermarket?

Jam, the links are in my sig! (they're just snapshots, tho)

BTW, I am a virtual piker compared to some of our friends here with 30, 40, 190 or more guitars -- many, many of them Taylors!!

Check out buddiesorg for an example of a REALLY nice collection beautifully presented!

It seems to be personal preference to me. Of course my body chemistry doesn't seem to attack my tuners...

I think it could be compromising--in a military sense--to display the entire arsenal at once. Wouldn't be prudent.
