This is the best price I have seen......but no experience with this outfit and there is a leadtime of 3-4 weeks

But you should be able to find them for a little bit more elsewhere that has them in stock.

"mainstreetmusician" on ebay. Just do a search for seller. $42.50 + $3.85 shipping. A little cheaper than MailBox Music. Transaction went very smoothly and I received the tuners quickly.

Ditto. I bought a set a few weeks ago from them. Paid with PayPal and got 'em in the mail two days later. Changing strings is so much faster now.

Purty things, they are. Cheap way to relieve my TAS.

Of course, that was 40 bucks I could have saved toward my 510e.

I had not heard of these before. They look pretty cool and I can see where they would save some time when you change the strings. Do they work well and has anyone had any trouble with them?

Default How they work

The hole is not in the middle of the post, it is slightly off to one side. You turn the empty post by hand until it clicks. Then the holes line up and gives you a big hole to push in your string.

You put the string in and start winding. I highly recommend not cutting the string at this point. See below.

The post would not turn for a while while the internal mechanism catches. The tension keeps the string in. So when there is enough tension, the string is locked.

Then you trim the string.

The only minor minor disadvantage is that since it is automatic, and the string tension locks it, you can't release the tension without the string poping out. Say on my spertzel (sp), I can loosen a string, file the nut a little bit, and tighten them again. On the Grovers, as soon as you loosen the string and pull it, it comes off. Now you have a string that is barely long enough and with a bent end and it is hard to put on again. Of course, except for fitting a nut, I never totally loosen the string and reuse it? Kills the strings and the sound. So I don't see it as a disadvantage.

One other thing, the post is like 1/8 inch higher. Your strings will sit 1/8 inch higher so the break angle over the nut is not the same. I guess since it is locking, the break angle is less important. Maybe someone with more knowledge can chime in here.

Looks like MainstreetMusic raised the price now to $49.95 + shipping.

Thanks for the links guys. Can the string be wound on the post more than just a half turn? If so the break angle can be increased if desired.

Yes, you can wrap plenty of string on the post if you want. If you're referring to the picture I posted above, I've always liked to leave as little string around the posts as I can get away with. My thinking is, the less string on the post, the less string that needs to be stretched.

I only do this because with another guitar of mine, even after the stretch-tune-stretch-tune exercise I would undertake as part of changing the strings, the would start to go flat again in a few days. I found if I wrapped less string around the posts, that tended not to happen.
