Default Equalizers section added to sticky thread

If you have a few minutes, give the copy in post #151 for the new EQ section a read and let me know if I've made any errors or have any glaring omissions.

From all I can tell most people use software EQs at this point, some based on hardware and some on algorithms. There are notable quality differences between them. I'd be more interested in seeing the software than I am hardware.

EDIT - sorry I posted this. I see you have also posted software plugins.

I'm unlikely to give plugins the same treatment because there are too many of them and companies are coming out with new ones all the time. It would take way too much time to do it comprehensively where with hardware changes and additions happen much less frequently.

I'm sure most people use plugins for a few reasons:
They're cheaper.
  • You get instant recall in your daw when you open a session.
  • You can own a kazillion before you approach the price of the some of the upper echelon outboard units.

But a lot of people are still interested in outboard gear as they almost always sound better than their plugin counterparts and we like to twist knobs.

But this thread was to ask some folks to proofread what I wrote in that section.

A few notes, for completeness:

"Q" stands for Quality, or Quality Factor, if you want to be precise.

You missed "Proportional Q" EQ types (e.g. the API 550a/b)

You missed a few filter types:
Baxandall
Tilt
Notch
Bandpass

There are also some specialty filters (e.g. sword, flat top, etc.), but that may be getting too granular.

Thanks, Steve. I'll make some changes later today. I considered adding Bax and Tilt but I thought that might be getting too deep in the weeds, thinking about it more, though, I'll just go ahead and add them. Notch I meant to add but by the time I finished the thing I was doing, I forgot. I'm probably going to skip bandpass. Unless I've been missing something for 20+ years, that doesn't really come up and I'd rather avoid than cause confusion.

I knew what Q did long before I knew what Q stood for. I think that's probably true for most of us. But even knowing what it stands for, I don't think it's very descriptive because it's too vague.
