I agree with Kerbie re Martin 15's. When I bought mine - just a few years ago - I tried out several other makes and chose the Martin because of it's clean sound. Some of the other makes I tried were just Too 'jangley'.
But as Kerbie said - only 'if you like Mahogany' - it is a specific type of sound.

2ND THE USED 15 SERIES MARTIN

I own an Eastman AC312 and really like it. I agree with the others on these guitars as being great sounding solid wood guitars. That said, I bought mine because it had some flaws that brought down the price to $400 with case. I guess I feel that too much over $400 and you are getting close to getting a nice used Martin. Better IMHO.

I kind of feel that if a person is shopping around the $500 mark, one could save and hold out just a tad more for a used 15 series Martin OM.

I have a friend who bought a Wechter 000 (TO-8414...all solid spruce/hog, 12-fret, nice width nut, slothead, Plek'ed, etc....in the $850 list price range new, mid or high 600s street) a few years ago, but I haven't gotten to go by recently and try it out myself. When he first got it, I wasn't anywhere near my "guitar comeback after 40 years" and thus cannot report with confidence on playability, BUT its appearance and sound were certainly quite nice. Think there might be a rosewood brother to this, too, but not sure. Finding a bricks-and-mortar Wechter dealer, now...THAT'S a trick. (My friend bought it online, based on a magazine review.)

Ten years ago, one could pick up used Martin 15 series guitars (00-15/000-15... even the 000-15S) in the 5-600 dollar range. I tried out all three and never paid more than 600 bucks. But folks (-err sellers) are pushing the price up a bit.

The 'new' vintage styled Eastman E6 OM (sitka/mahogany) is priced near 700 bucks and could be had for less. Sure, these are NOT Martins... but for 5-700 bucks you can't get a solid wood Martin that sounds this good.

If you like wide bridge spacing similar to a Martin OM-18V or OM-18GE you might try the Epiphone Masterbilt EF models.

I'd say go for an Eastman E20OM if you like Rosewood or E10OM if you like Mahogany. Both can be had used for a bit more or less than what your budget is. Great guitars worth three times the price IMO.
