Default Beach music

My wife sings and we both play guitar. We’re long time “weekend warriors”. These days almost all of our performances are in retirement homes, and usually just 3 or 4 a month.

We just played our 3rd of 4 Irish music shows for this years “St Pat’s Day” season.

We are anticipating requests for “beach music” this summer. We have never worked up a “beach music” set. We will probably have a drummer with us for venues large enough to accommodate a 3rd person - he will bring his “sound machine”, some kind of electronic synthesizer type pad that he can play with drumsticks to create all kinds of drum kits sounds.

So I thought to try to tap into the power of crowdsourcing by asking here for suggestions for tunes to include in a good beach music set.

Thank you in advance for all suggestions!

You can’t go wrong with “Kokomo” by The Beach Boys.

Where (geographic location) are you talking about?
When many refer to "Beach Music" it is specific to "Carolina" beach music (SC, NC, VA, GA) and rooted in Shag dancing. It has nothing to do with Beach Boys, et. al.

No "beach music" set can be seriously considered that doesn't include Jimmy Buffett. Maybe even a little Kenny Chesney.

Go for the soul: Fontella Bass, the Coasters, Aretha Franklin, the Four Tops, the Isley Brothers, Martha and the Vandellas, Curtis Mayfield, the Platters, Sam and Dave, Smokey Robinson, the Supremes, the Temptations, and the unbeatable tunes that Steve Cropper, Carole King, Laura Nyro, and Doc Pomus cranked out for other artists.

When you've plumbed all that, the Beatles, Creedence, and the Stones will cover the whiteboy waterfront.

Finish it off with some good old Laurel Canyon sounds: Buffalo Springfield, Byrds, CS&N, Doors, Mamas and Papas, Joni Mitchell, Monkees, Graham Parsons, Linda Ronstadt, James Taylor.

Then make Simon and Garfunkel the cherry on top and you're there, baby!

Yes, that is a fairly definitive list of classic "Carolina Beach Music." Being from the southeast US, "Beach Music" is a specific term. The genre originated in, and grew out, of Myrtle Beach, SC. The music went hand in hand with a dance called the Shag. It is still going strong.

When I moved south in the late 80s a lot of people were talking about Beach Music. I had no idea what they were talking about, I thought it was old Beach Boys Records.

It is not a separate idiom but culls from many and any that feature easy music to party to in the summer, usually in the middle aged and up demographic. Here’s one radio station that will give you a feel for it.

I think music that fits in at backyard beach parties is anything that people like to dance to, even a little funk like Brick House.

I was going to say that you can't go wrong with Parrot Head songs.
How about "Toes" and "Five O'clock Somewhere"?
