Default Disassemble a GS-Mini as ultra-travel guitar?

Why not disassemble a GS-Mini as an ultra-travel guitar.

Taylor’s GS-Mini is considered a travel guitar, by its size.

VoyageAir uses a hinged folding neck to travel-size a guitar.

Journey Overhead uses a removable Taylor-like neck to travel-size a guitar.

That got me to thinking….

Why not use a GS-Mini as a travel guitar but with the neck completely removed? I am imagining replacing the hex bolts with finger-bolts. Then, like a Voyage-Air or Journey-Overhead you would loosen the strings, unbolt the neck and put it away for travel.

The Taylor NT neck reassembles in minutes. The trick would be easy access to the bolts through the sound hole or through a port hole.

I might just try such a conversion as a project. I would do the following:

- Replace the hex bolts with wing-nut type finger bolts
- A tiny drop of CA to hold the shims from falling off
- Perhaps reverse stringing the bridge to avoid excess wear from frequent removal
- Rope style capo to keep some tension on strings so they don’t unwind
- Some modified case as luggage to lay the neck on the body

Or maybe even go a step further and put access holes in the body so you can remove the neck bolts easier, like the Journey-Overhead.

Keeping my eyes open now for a spare/beatup GS-Mini to experiement on.

Why not just buy a used Voyage-Air, which is designed for travel?
I love mine, and it goes on vacation with me now instead of my Baby Taylor or Martin Backpacker, which used to serve that purpose.

I know this is 8 years ago, but I still think it's a fantastic idea. Did you try it?
I have a Journey of-660 and I love it, but at 5.5lb it's too heavy (think cycling around Europe with it, plus all your belongings, on your back for 6 weeks).

Just because you can, doesn't mean you should...
