Default Speaking of Goodall

If I remember correctly, James Goodall had a few people working at his shop in Hawaii. Did any of them strike out on their own when he moved back to Ft Bragg?

Default Goodall - Hawaii

I think I can speak authoritatively on this...
I live in Kona where James shop was located. Visited the shop often.
I believe he had his son Luke and 3 other non-family employees in the shop.
I'm told that in his California location he has only Luke working in the shop.
No one can tell me if the 3 Hawaii workers are still in Kona or have left to work at other luthier shops. I'll keep asking.

I've wondered about this same thing. I thought at one point there were closer to 7 or 8 employees in the HI shop. I've been to his new Fort Bragg Shop and its all family ran now.

Wasn't Federico Vento doing some finishing for him?

I was under the impression that he had up to 25 employees in Hawaii.

To the best of my knowledge they had 15 employees in various capacities at their high point in Hawaii.

This jibes with what Jean told me a couple years ago... James said "No... we only had 9"... and Jean said, "I'm talking about EVERYONE, including the front office! (which, of course, would include her!)... James said, "Oh, that's right..."!

I asked James if any of his guys went on to their own shops, and he didn't know of anyone building guitars, but said that one fellow was building ukeleles...

When I first befriended James and his family, I asked him about Hawaii and the shop there; he told me that he had so many folks working for him that his role was more of a "quality control" manager than a "hands-on" luthier... and that he was excited at the prospect of building guitars with just himself and his son, Luke.

I have to call them again soon, as it's been too long between times... Luke's a proud Papa now!

Hopefully, they have more black long sleeve t-shirts in the back room by now!
