I'll take an arm rest please for my Savoy. Thank you in advance.

Cool touches, Tommy!

You're really making that Savoy your own.

I think I'm justified in necro-bumping, as I've made a video demo:

Ditto. Thanks for sharing, Tommy. You’re not helping my GAS.

Nice playing!

What is name of the edge guard you attached to the body for a forearm rest?

My only wish is when they were doing all the sculpting and design it would have included a arm bevel and squared headstock. The burst was a great improvement, IMO

Just an arm rest I cut using a couple pieces of ebony (it wraps slightly over the edge for more comfort and to hide the strips of adhesive that stick it to the top).

Like Rainsong, and Composite Acoustics, Blackbird uses a more traditional building method, whereby the soundboard is a separate piece. This method allows them to voice the tops using braces, and/or double top construction. They could add an armrest of course, but as with wood guitars, it would definitely add to the price, and I doubt there would be much of a demand on a small guitar like the Savoy.

As for the headstock, it's the signature Blackbird shape. Over the last ten years I've learned to appreciate the design as compared to other travel guitars I have used. One of my travel guitars actually wore through the inside of the gig bag thanks to it's non rounded headstock. With Blackbird, form follows function, everything is there for a reason.

Makes sense Ted, I think of the Taylor 812 Deluxe and love the look and feel. But see your point on cost, it is not an inexpensive guitar just the way it is. I think Joe has a winner and just like the burst I am sure as time goes on more innovation will follow. Very creative company!

I also believe roundness is also more mold-friendly.
(I agree with Ted--embrace it.)

I'm impressed that you made the arm rest yourself!
  • The two pieces of ebony were joined together--dovetailed?
  • I suppose you used a body tracing to transfer the exact curve?
  • Did you route it out to fit over the edge?
  • Is it noticeably more comfortable?
  • Are you using the removable 3M Command Strips for adhesives?

I used face plate stock for the wood.

Yes, I traced the body curve onto the wood.

Just a simple clamped butt joint, because it's not really under stress--just a little lip to hide the edge and the adhesive strips. I cut them out slightly oversized with a jigsaw, glued and clamped them...then did the final shaping by hand using a tabletop belt-sander and tabletop grinder...with wood as hard as ebony, these worked well for shaping.

I do think it's slightly more comfortable, and keeps my forearm off the top, but by no means needed on such a small instrument (the edge doesn't dig in like on some larger guitars).

I used 3M VHB tape. Holds pretty well. (On shinier guitars, less so.)
