Meander and enjoy the journey, Evan. I have plenty of push behind my vocals - found myself trying to keep the volume down overall on the PA with those recordings. With the Zoom recorder on a short tripod on a rug, it was more in line with the bass unit on the Bose PA - so likely carrying more guitar at that level. I've been playing (and playing out) for 5 decades, but haven't done any recording to speak of in over 30 years. This old dog is working on new tricks... still having to use a tutorial to move files from stereo to multi-track.

To my ears, the Zoom and similar are great for convenience and sound clear sort of, but are "OK", at best.
But listening to recording comparisons over the past years, compared to a decent, inexpensive mic with interface to a PC, etc., Zoom, Tascam, and such, sound to me a bit "distant", sometimes a bit muted. They are great to use for new ideas, practice, etc. Just for guitar or voice, one or the other, not bad, but trying to record voice and guitar together at the same time--not so much. Some of these small recorders like Zoom have over dubbing built in and that might help. Recording the guitar first with mic placed for guitar, then singing separately with the mic placed for voice. To really hear your voice and guitar more accurately, you might need to upgrade a bit. There are lots of inexpensive routes discussed in past years in the "Record" section of the forum--as well as some unthinkably expensive setups as well. But the budget routes should all be big improvement over a stand alone recorder. |

Like much of what we do, I'm just having fun with the recording. I have a "live" sound I like with the PA, tried to capture that with the stereo mics on the Zoom. I'm surprised no one mentioned the clicking noise from the Play Acoustic footswitch.
This is a big ol' step forward from using the mic on an iPad Mini.  Or, how about this one from 2011 with the built-in mic on a pocket camera (way low tech)...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DOfvD2MxMG8  Yes, an Ovation. I made a dozen or so recordings for the Blonde with the Zoom - just turned on "record" and played. I will try some other techniques one of these days. |

I like the 2011 recording for a number of reasons, in particular I think it illustrates a nice symbiosis of guitar and player. You have a great voice and are a kick-butt guitar player--it's really sweet when they come together. |

I may be doing some more recording. No, the Columbia Record Club didn't call to offer me 1¢ for doing 9 albums (old guy reference
 )... the dredge operation that kept us from getting our boat in the water for almost a month when we got home is back in our canal; as a routing for getting the pipe to the next canal down.Which means my boat is likely going to be trapped at our dock for another indeterminate amount of time. Yesterday, I was viewing this from the boat...  And this...  Finishing with this...  Today, the dredge crew was putting together the pipe in front of our dock...  Which means I am probably going to have more free time. Singing and playing each day gets me out of some chores. A guy's gotta have a plan. |

As an update, we have been able to get over and around the dredge pipe, so still some water time to be had...
  Plenty of guitar time, too. Today on the blog, I wrote about the difference a pick can make... https://captnjim.blogspot.com/2017/1...d-you-can.html  A range of picks from "premium" to the typical ol' celluloid, a carbon fiber pick, a home-made acrylic, Tusq, and others. My personal favorites: the Gravity Gold and Gravity Classic acrylic, and the Charmed Life brown series, depending on the guitar. Fun to spend a little time just playing around. |

Yeah, the spoonbills are striking when flying over and the sun hits those pink wings. Lots of birding here in south Texas. Sanibel Island brings back some fun memories: we spent the winter on our boat cruising around south Florida after we first retired. I remember pulling into a swanky marina there and the lady at the office put us between a couple $1M+ boats... I said to Joan, "Maybe we should put out a couple extra fenders?"

It's that time again... you better not shout, you better not cry.
With Thanksgiving out of the way, time to pull out some Christmas songs. One of my favorites is "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas"... I have to relearn it every year. A few more traditional songs, and I'm good to go.Anyone else put some Christmas songs in their repertoire this time of year? |
