Default Coated 12 string sets?

Just acquired a Taylor 562ce, and I put some Daddario XS 10-47s on there, as XS or Elixirs are my go tos, especially on 12 strings, where changing them often is a pain. I’m also a fan of the tone on both. Unfortunately I think I need 11s in there due to the short scale and tuning to open tunings - I’m getting some buzz at the low frets - but neither Elixirs or the XS come in 11 sets. I did see that Curt Mangan makes coated 11s, but I’m not seeing anything else. Any other options? I guess I could piece together some Elixir singles, but that could get pricey.

Yeah I looked at their site, but apparently they don’t offer a coated 12 string set.

I saw those in my searches- they’re about half the price of most coated 12 string sets, which is great, but they might be a little heavy. Though so far I have the Taylor in dadgad and open d a lot. Have you ever used them?

Default Strings for 562ce

I’m very interested in this thread as I also just acquired 562ce and also like coated strings for a number of reasons.

Smile Elixirs work for me

I have the standard issue Elixir PB Lights on my 552. And they work well even tuned down to D concert.

My action is low and the Tim Luranc setup allows me to whack it pretty hard before the Flamenco snare drum effect begins happening

YMMV

I have two 12 strings and I can only find two sets in my preferred gauge 0f 12/12 - 54/30.
They are D'addario EJ37s (PB) and Martin M190 (bronze)

I had understood that Gibson no longer made/sold strings and can't find any here in the UK.

Buying strings for 12 string guitars is a nightmare!

I use coated D'Addaro 10s for my 12-string routinely and tune to concert pitch on my Guild F512 with no fretbuzz. If I were getting a little string buzz with a shorter scale 12-string and open tunings, I would dial in a little more relief with the trussrod. I would not use 12s on a 12-string unless I were tuning the guitar way down to 3 or 4 half-tones lower than normal because the tension would be too high and could damage the guitar.

Yeah, I could definitely tweak the truss rod and keep the tens, but I’m thinking 11s might be my sweet spot given that guitar played well with the slightly heavier strings that came on it, and the fact that I’m tuning down a lot.

Perhaps try the StringJoy standard set of 11s for feel and sound because they will make you a custom coated set if you like them.

Not 11's and not coated but I'd be looking to try a set of Martin Retro Monels on that mahogany 12-string - they last a long time too.

Good to know, thanks. I’ve never tried Stringjoys- can you tell me what they’re similar to?

I think I’m going to give the Curt Mangan 11s a try, and also order a 6 string set of Elixir 11s plus the appropriate singles to piece together a set. Seems like a good place to start.

I haven’t tried them because I don’t want to go that heavy. I use uncoated Pyramid 339, which is a set of 11’s with lighter octaves to bring the set back to normal tension.

I also make custom sets with Nickel Bronze. NB is fairly inexpensive, and still “coated” (with nickel instead of a polymer).

One other thought: have you checked the frets with a rocker? Low action demands level frets.
