After determining that a rosewood Martin OM was the most versatile and comfortable guitar going, I went through an OM-21, OM-28, OM-28V and finally an OM-42. These are really wonderful guitars. As for a pickup, I use K&K mini's with a Tonedexter, very hard to beat for sound and convenience. You will not be disappointed with a rosewood Martin OM, and I think a cutaway is probably an extravagance.

That would be another guitar to consider. I picked up a ‘93 J-40 for a little more than that. It’s like a cross between an OM and a dreadnought, with a cavernous sound. This demo has reverb added, but the guitar sounds very much like mine: Here’s another demo without (as much) processing: |
